  • P0441 and P1655 after fuel pump install

Hey all. Just in case you're not familiar, here are the particulars.

    -1996 Century
    -3100 V6
-Just put in a fuel pump
-Now have codes P0441 and P1655

The internet tells me that 441 is EVAP purge flow fault, and 1655 is a GM-specific code with the following possible causes:
    - Faulty EVAP Purge Solenoid
    - EVAP Purge Solenoid harness is open or shorted
    - EVAP Purge Solenoid circuit poor electrical connection

So they seem to be related. I thought they might have been caused by the fuel pump install, because when I installed the tank after putting in a new pump, the rubber elbow coming off the tank going into the charcoal canister line tore. I replaced it with some fuel hose and a clamp, then deleted the codes, but they came back within one key cycle. The internet also tells me that the purge solenoid is part of this thing I originally could not identify when taking it off to do the head gaskets (click for bigger):

Further, Rock Auto tells me that those parts are shared with the early gen 3 3100 only, meaning if I get a junkyard part, it can be no newer than 1999.

Any other advice? Am I barking up the wrong tree by thinking I need to replace the things in that picture?

Bumping this because I got the 441 code again, but NOT the 1655. I replaced both of those solenoids in the picture up above not long after the original post last summer. What makes this aggravating is that when I originally went to the junkyard to try to rustle up the parts, I found that every other 3100 car only had one of the solenoids (the square-ish one). A little further digging led to me "remembering" that my car has California emissions, since it was sold new in southern California. I ended up having to get one of the parts from a dealer, because Autozone, O'Reilley, Napa, and RockAuto didn't even have a listing for it. I think it was the round one, and I recall it being like $40 or something dumb. Not terrible for a dealer part, but still a lot.

The only other thing I can think of is that my patch vacuum hose I put on the tank isn't doing so well. I can't really see one of those solenoids failing in less than a year. I will crawl under the car in the morning to check on that. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas?

I'd check all the lines and then take a real good look at the canister looking for cracks. The canister does have a charcoal filter in it, could be bad?
As for the solenoids did you buy a low cost ones? The new norm is low cost(junk out of the box), mid cost(sometimes ok) and high(best quality). Seems like most brands have these levels.
Also guess it's time to start checking the wires and connections.

The square one is a Duralast, but I had to get the round one from a dealer. My understanding is that the 1655 code indicates a failed solenoid, while the 441 is a more generic "flow fault" error. Once I get a chance, I will start chasing down vacuum lines...

When I was doing my plug wires it seems that I knocked out the large tube that goes to the purge valve. Odd thing is I just found out today that it happened(so it has been almost two weeks) and that there was never a code or problems when driving. But the car never went on the highway, so that may be why.

441 code went away on its own.
