  • 1997 Buick Century Problems Installing Cylinder He

    Hello,

I'm in the process of putting back together my old 3.1L after finally doing a true rebuild. The problem is I brought some Felbro Cylinder headbolts Part number ES 72892. The problem is in this set of bolts there's some funky looking ones.

The ones on the top left in this set photo. I don't recall taking off any bolts that looked like that when I first removed the heads. Second problem is that it's also been so long since I removed the heads I wouldn't even know where these bolts would go if they were replacements for OEM bolts. When I pulled these out the box it completely threw me off. The part number says it fits my 1997 but the box says Vin J which is the 1999 and later 3.1L's. Anyone know anything about this?

The one with the threaded top is for by the alternator, so that the alternator support bar can attach there. I can't remember the other one off the top of my head...

If you count them I believe it is just two different options for that style bolt... There are 16 in an engine and 17 in that photo. If you don't need that special bolt just put it somewhere that will be out of the way.

IIRC the other one is for the far left, lower bolt on the front head. It's a shoulder for a certain motor mount to slide over.

If yours didn't use it, just toss it in your bolt-bucket for something else.

Woa thanks! Man you guys are awesome. I couldn't find anything that explained where the bolts should be placed. Not even in the Haynes manual.

If I'm looking at this guys image correctly isn't that the funky bolt on the end there?

ID:	377739 Now that I think about it I do recall my engine mount resting on something there. This is what I get for not taking pictures of the engine before I took it apart. That and having to wait 4 months to get my parts back from the Machine shop now stuff slips my mind. Thanks guys you make me proud to own an old 3.1

Yup, finished torquing the bolts down. Felt good... real good. Something about torquing heads that makes you realize.. the engine is finally coming together. That funky bolt is also a dowel for the front passenger side engine mount. I found the bag of my old headbolts and sure enough there was the old version of it in the bag rust and all. The other bolt with the threads hanging out I'm not sure what that's for bit it's not for a 97 Century at least. Still think Fel-Pro could have at least put a diagram or explanation for those bolts in the box.
