Do your rocker arms, studs, balls and nut look like these?

Yes, except for the rocker arm, which is a roller tip that I bought aftermarket.

The problem here is that those studs are not for adjustable rockers, they are the ones I took out of my engine and replaced with studs for adjustable rockers. These are ment to be tightened down to a set torque, the nut tightens up against the sholder on the stud. I don't know if the pushrods you have are proper for that type of adjustment or not. Either way trying to adjust the rockers with the type of stud and nut combination you have just won't work. Larry

I am going to say this again:

FACTORY 3.1 STUDS, NUTS, AND ROCKER PIVOTS. AFTERMARKET ROCKERS. 3.1 ROCKERS ARE ADJUSTABLE.

All I need are the pushrod guides that go under the studs.

Factory studs in the aluminum heads are not adjustable. If yours look like the studs in the picture I posted (you say they do) then they are not adjustable studs. To get adjustable rockers on an aluminum head 3100 you need studs that are (I think) 3/8 X 24 tpi on top and M10 1.5 on the bottom that goes into the head. Right now you are using the rocker pivots from the non adjustable 3100 rocker arms which have a bore of about .388 and nuts that are non locking with your roller tip arms which came with a pivot that has a bore of .375 (3/8 inch and lock nuts which are 3/8 24) no wonder your valve train is hosed up. I have the exact same setup you have, but mine runs and yours doesn't. The difference is that I used the proper studs and rockers. You are going to do as you please any way, but you need to step back, read a little and get the proper hardware. I thik the proper studs are avaliabel for the 4.3 Vortec which fit your 3100 aluminum heads. Good luck. Larry

Trotterlg is right, factory 3.1 studs are non-adjustable. Just get the right ones.

Well he said he had some iron head guides he cut up so perhaps the studs are from an iron head which means they are adjustable. Iron heads never had the net lash rockers even up until the 95 Camaro was finished and they dropped the iron head motor all together.

I still don't think that would make a proper valve train with SBC rockers. On the 3100 the guides go under the studs and are part of the geomerty to get the right height, so their thickness is important. Guess you could go with no guides and use the self guided rockers. Do the iron head studs have a bolt head half way down to seat on the head or are they just straight studs? What size pivots do they take? It is so easy and cheap to get the valve train right and such a disaster if it is screwed up that I can't believe it is worth all the effort and not be done right. I just used (I think) 4.3 studs and SBC roller tip rockers (1.6 ratio) and LS6 springs with the standard tops and retainers. I put in some top hat type valve seals with a built in base for the springs to sit on. Larry

If your considering the rockers adjustable because you can tighten the nut on the stock stud to zero lash and still tighten it down then yes in theory they are "adjustable" but there is nothing to hold that nut in place. SBC adjustable rockers have a special stud with a cap nut that has a locking ability... You adjust the rocker using the large nut then tighten down the small alan head plug which locks that nut in place. Without that your just asking for troubles. As others have said, stock 3.1 studs and nuts/pivots are not meant to be used in an adjustable application, they are tighten till they bottom out type of thing, preset lifter load.
