It all depends. Is it in the car or on a pallet in a yard?
In the car the quickest way to ID any engine is to look at the emissions sticker. Car engine often have the displacement cast into the intake or part of the engine cover. S-10's can get trickier because the 4.3L was offered along side the 2.8L. But the quick way to tell is look at the air cleaner. If you see the map sensor on the side it is a 2.8L. 4.3L's have the MAP mounted on a bracket over the valve cover. If those parts are missing then the throttle body is another clue. A 2.8L has the lines entering at the front of the engine. The 4.3L has the lines entering at the back. If the whole intake or even the heads are off then on a 2.8L the cylinders on the passenger side are furthest forward. On the 4.3L the drivers side are furthest forward.1993 EXT. note the "pairing" of the center exhaust port. i assume this would be a reliable way to tell 4.3 from 2.8 as well?
