Engine degreaser recommendations

What is the preferred engine degreaser these days. I want to be sure that what ever I use, it's friendly with all the non-metallic parts on this thing. I also want something that is going to be friendly with POR-15 Engine Enamel.

Now that I've got this thing on the motor stand, and have removed the not to be used AC compressor and PS pump, what I'm finding is one of the dirtiest motors I've ever dealt with.

When I had mine on the engine stand, I just used brake parts cleaner on everything except electrical parts. What I did for paint prep was use different sized wire brushes on my air drill to clean the engine and that worked really well, but it takes some time.

I hope mine ends up looking near as nice as yours. I'd planned on using the wire brushes...I've got a lot of time...LOL. Using the the brake cleaner leave any kind of a residue that will effect the paint adhesion?

No...the brake cleaner won't affect paint adhesion, however you'll need to be extra careful working on the engine while the paint cures because it will get damaged easily, but I got pretty good at doing small touch-ups. You might not have that issue with the POR-15, but I used both Krylon and Rustoleum engine paint on mine. I definitely like the Krylon brand better and would not use Rustoleum again. I painted the exhaust manifolds and heat shields with Krylon BBQ grill paint and everything else got engine paint.

I painted the bolts, but had to touch up most of them after final assembly because most paints simply won't hold up to the stress of tightening the bolts. Some people use a dedicated oven to cure painted parts, but I don't have one so will depend on the engine getting hot during the first few run hours to fully cure everything good.

I've used brake clean as well. I've also used Barryman engine degreaser and that stuff works awesome. Dirt seams to melt and fall right off, but no one around here stocks it. If they haven't changed the can it has a pic of a 2.8 on it.

I've also used bbq grill paint on my trucks exhaust and I think it held up better than the high temp paint with ceramic did on my car, but then again I'm willing to bet the exhaust on my car is quite a bit hotter.

ZEP Industrial Purple works pretty well and is easy to get at Home Depot.
