  • Throttle problems

    Hey guys,
Been working on my '87 celebrity VR and on the suggestion from people on another group I pulled the throttle body and gave it a good cleaning. When I put it all back together and fired it up, the motor raced @ redline. I disconnected the TPS, IAC, and MAF sensors which made no difference, the motor still raced hard.
I really need this car to be running and driving and dont have any money to send it to the garage.
    PLEASE HELP!!!
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

sounds like either a gigantic vacuum leak or the throttle being held open for some reason.

    got any type of scanner?

also, did you disconnect the ECM/battery afterwards to reset any learned values?

Need a wiring diagram for any GM car or truck from 82-06(and 07-08 cars)? PM me!

No, sadly I dont have a scanner. But I did disconnect the battery. The big problem was a vacuum leak, when I re-assembled the throttle body, the gasket dropped out of position. Thankfully I have a comm. account at the local parts store so they replaced the gasket free (even though it was really my fault). Put the new gasket in with some sealer and now the car *only* races to 2500~3k. Plus the throttle response is total crap and it seems the timing is way too advanced (these problems did appear with the first gasket I put in) but I thought the ECM controlled the timing so I'm confused there.
No matter, I'll be taking the car into the garage and let them tell me whats wrong. At least it runs enough I can drive it there.

Sounds like you have more then 1 vac leak. Otherwise the engine simply won't have the power to idle that high unless the IAC is stuck wide open or the throttle blade was damaged or not closing all the way. (or commanded that high but thats not the case)

Did you mess with the screw that adjusts the blades resting position?

No, I didnt do anything with the screws.
I did however take the car into the garage and they found that the TPS was completely dead and the EGR was intermittantly sticking. I still have to fix the EGR, but the idle is down to a nice and safe 1k rpm & the throttle response is much improved.

So once they replaced the faulty TPS, the high idle took care of itself?

Yup, when the garage replaced the TPS, they calibrated it to the car and that took care of the high idle.
This morning I cleaned & greased the EGR so we will have to see if fixes the rest of the problems.

Ah yes, I heard these TPS's do not like moisture. I had a bad spot in the TPS after cleaning the throttle myself a couple years ago. Glad it is fixed for you.
