  • 3.4L Water Pump - How to Change Directions?

I have a '94 Camaro engine with the anti-clockwise rotating water pump and would like to know what is needed to switch to a clockwise rotating pump for simplicity. I know it is necessary to switch the timing cover but which engine do I need to get a timing cover from - an early 3.1L? And what else is needed besides a gasket and the correct pump? Will the oil pan still fit or do I also need to change that out?

    Thank you!

I believe the 2.8 Fiero cover uses the CW pump, it should fit the 3.4 just fine. Maybe one of the Fiero guys can confirm but i read that just a few days ago on another forum.

Do I also have to change out the oil pan? I am getting rid of the crank trigger ignition and running a distributor. The reeason I want to change is to make the engine as simple as possible. I like the simplicity of this

        Rick,
If you have problems finding a Fiero cover you can buy new CW covers on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/140364272386...84.m1423.l2649 Your oil pan will work with either cover.

Shouldn't have to with a Fiero cover.

          That does look much better.

Cool guys, thanks! It looks like I don't need a tensioner for the belt if I can adjust it with the alternator. At least that is the way it looks here.

The turnbuckle tensioner/bracket setup from BCC works great.

You can kinda see it here, I'm using the CCW pump and i have power steering so there are a few more pullies though.

Are you running a serpentine belt or V belts? I don't see how changing the rotation of the pump makes anything easier. Personally I think a serpentine belt is way easier and more reliable and you don't have to manually tension it.

Anyway an 86 S-10 uses the new style oil pan gasket seal with the standard rotation pump. The Fiero/Camaro pump is a short pump with a flat pulley for use with electric fans. The S-10 pump is a long style for use with a mechanical fan.

The engine is going into an old MG and I want the transplant to look period. While the serpentine belt is probably more functional, it looks out of place in the MG.

Well you can buy the front cover right from GM Performance parts. The 3.4L crate engine cover is what you are looking for. It will mate to the Camaro pan and clockwise pump. It also has a timing pointer. A new cover will guarantee a corrosion free and flat part with good gasket surfaces. I noticed Dorman makes a reproduction piece but I cannot speak to the quality of it. For the pump I would just buy a good reman part. They are cheap and I have used several of them with great results. Remember that the S-10 and Camaro/Fiero pumps differ in their snout length and use different pulleys. You will need a truck pump if you use a mechanical fan.

Superdave, wondering where you got the alternator bracket? I'm looking for a simple way to mount one on my track roadster, needs to be as high and in towards the center as possible.

http://www.britishcarconversions.com/, You may have to contact Marc though. I looked and didn't see it listed. it would be for aluminum heads in a RWD config. If you have iron heads then this is the right one. http://www.britishcarconversions.com...category_id=28
