  • 3500 swap alternator wiring causing draw?

I'm using a 2001 Malibu alternator on my 3500 swap and I think it's causing a draw. It uses a 3-wire plug and I have the red and grey wires hooked up to the stock Fiero alternator wires (seems to be connected to a battery light in the dash). I didn't connect the orange (according to the pinout, it's a "Fuse Output- Battery" wire) wire to anything because I didn't see it mentioned in the charging system diagram, only the connector view. After the engine has run, I can hear a high pitched whine coming from the alternator. Also, I think it's causing a slow draw from the battery (don't know how extensive, as I've only had it hooked up overnight once). With the alternator plug disconnected, the whine stops.

Could the orange wire not being hooked up be causing an electrical draw? The alternator seems to charge fine with the engine running, at 13.6 - 14V according to TunerPro. I plan on insuring the car on Monday but until I figure this out I'll probably just disconnect the alternator plug while the car is off.

I'd really like some input on this. I just ended up replacing my alternator and I'm not sure if it failed because of wiring. I've noticed it makes a very quiet high-pitched whine sound when the engine is NOT running, on and off every 5 seconds or so. I don't believe this is normal. I've hooked up the orange wire to the power distribution block with a 10a fuse inline and it still makes the whining sound. It goes away when I unplug the pigtail from the alt.

      Maybe this will help?

an alternator that draws significant current is one with a failed diode.

It hasn't been drawing a significant current, but I have a feeling it's there. It's more the high pitched sound that has me worried.

When I did my LT1 swap, it was possible to wire the alternator so it only needed one wire and used an internal regulator. Is it possible to wire my alternator that way as well?

If my battery light in the dash was out, would that cause the behaviour I'm experiencing?

Ok I've managed to get the high pitched whine sound sorted out. I had a constant power source going to the.. pin C I think it was which turns out is supposed to have a switched power source. So I've now spliced it into the ignition module power source wire. However with the engine running I can hear a whirring sound coming from the alternator and it's charging at between 15 and 16V. The voltmeter in the dash reads about the same. I don't know if that's normal; the voltmeter used to read the same with the 2.8's alternator so I don't know if I should be worrying about this anymore. With the 2.8 I thought the gauge might just be inaccurate but now I'm not so sure.
