  • 3100 swap to dune buggy, starts then dies

Here is the deal. Motor ran in car, bought adapter plate, bolted to vw trans. Now the motor will fire right up but it then dies. What I do know is the motor still sparks when dies, fuel pressure is good, injectors stop injecting after the initial firing of the motor. So it appears that the injectors inject to get the motor to start, but they do not inject to keep the motor running. Opening the throttle as soon as it starts does not cause the motor to rev up. There are many lose wires but i don?t think that?s the cause of it not running. There was the little resistor in the key and that system is no longer with the motor. So i don?t know if the ECU is looking for the signal and not getting it or what. Also do you guys feel that any vacuum leaks would cause this problem? Thanks for you help and i look forward to your feedback.

Did the donor car have VATS? (chip in the key) With my VATS bypass removed, the motor starts but dies as soon as you release the key from start position.

Yeah it had the resistor in the key. I have the key still and i know which wire off the ECU went to the "anti theft relay". But other than that i have no idea how to get around it. I checked out your ride. That looks like a shit load of fun. Let me know on what else you think might be my problem.

If im not mistaken the VATS has to be "disabled" in the PCM software. In other words, custom chip is needed.

If the donor vehicle had OBD 1.5, it may be easier to just use a VATS bypass module. I built my own using parts from Radio Shack for around $20. But since time is of value, you may find that it would be easier and quicker to get one from Ebay.

With only having three wires, it is easy to hook up (12v+, Gnd and the output to ECM). It also eliminates the VATS module. If you use a 3 wire plug to install it, it still has the Anti theft device as the ECM will be disabled whenever you unplug it.

BTW... it is a blast to drive. Lots of fun, fairly peppy and it attracts alot of attention.

Most likely OBD-II. Almost all 96s where OBD-II.

Your symptoms are EXACTALLY how a vehicle with out the proper key code would react.

Then like CNCguy's 95 Lumina powered beast you too have a ODB 1.5.

No I have not... sorry. I found them on Ebay after having built my own bypass. Some sellers are slower than others, hope this one isnt one of the real slow ones. They have a very good feedback rating so hopefully you will hear from them soon. Did you pay using paypal? I almost always pay via paypal and ask the sellers to send an email when the item ships.
