  • Front engine mount - torque specs?

    I downloaded the torque spec FAQ but the motor mount torque specs are not very clear to me. Does anyone know the torque specs for the following motor mount brackets?

      I'm doing the 3500 engine swap into a 1999 Grand AM. I'm mounting the 3400 front motor mount to the LX9 3500 engine which came from a 2006 G6.

          Unfortunately, I can't find any GA specific torque specs, so I moved the thread hoping to get it more exposure. Hopefully some of the GA guys can help you out.

              I have noticed that the torques into all the alloy components are 37 ft-lbs. (Alternator bracket, strut to cylinder head bracket, other fasteners into the oil pan, etc.) Not that you should do that for an 8mm bolt. The ones you have look bigger. In other words, the 10mm 1.50 and similar should be safe at 35/37 ft-lb.

                I took another look at the picture and noticed two of the bolts that go into the first part of the mount & then the front cover are smaller. Those would NOT be torqued as high as 35 ft-lbs. I can post what spec Haynes gives for a normal front cover bolt in those positions.

                  I thought this would be an easy question to answer given the number of people doing engine swaps and mods, but I guess not. The engine mounts are one of the more critical areas that need to be torqued correctly otherwise I wouldn't be too concerned about not torquing them. Unfortunately the torque specs in the site FAQ are not very clear in this area.

                    FWIW, the GM service manual for my 05 GA with 3.4L v6 says that the engine mount bracket - right to front engine cover bolts are to be tightened to 75 lb ft. Reference pp 6-285 and 6-286

                      Dang! They better be biting into iron. It is easy to get the wrong idea -- I did a 4th hub swap on the transmission and read the torque for the bracket that mounts the differential bracket to the engine block instead of the torque for the engine mount to transmission. (Haynes wording and me working long on the rebuild.) I knew that was going to be too much for the alloy so I didn't go that high and strip out. Figured out the mistake much later w/o damage.
