  • Help identifying these 2 parts :(

I've been having some problems with vacuum on my car for a long time. Checked all my hoses and made sure they were tight and crackless yadda yadda. When I broke the motor down I ran into this nice surprise. Sadly, I've looked and looked but still can't tell what this suckers for or what hose connects to it. Do any of you 3.1 Guru's know?

Car is a 97 Buick Century.

also this is the heat shield, I like an idiot can't remember what it was covering.

Thanks for any help this has been bugging me for a while.

That vacuum should be for your heater controls. It operates the vents etc I believe

weird... my heats always been peachy keen. Any ideas on where the rest of this thing is supposed to be? I was looking at the Air/heat vac diagrams a month ago but couldn't find anything on this.

The only thing I can think of besides hvac supply is ac drain.

That heat shield looks like the one on the end of the transmission.

Yeah, I was thinking AC drain as well... Not sure on the heat shield, as it doesn't look familiar.

weird.. for a drain it was pointing up. Spooked me because end of it look like a hose was attached to it.

All vacuum hoses I've seen for HVAC go into a wiring harness, but who knows. It could actually be your HVAC vacuum supply because it does look like there could have been a hose in it.

AC drain instantly popped in my head originally because they do look sorta like that, even the taper on the end, but they aren't keyed in any way so you could turn one upside down fairly easy.

I'm going to use my detective skills and say it's a drain, since you can see a nice spot of rust on my rack and steering pinion below it like some water has been draining onto it. I wonder how it got flipped upside down? Oh well.

Thanks for all the help on this.

Have you pulled it out to see what's behind it?

yeah, I did today actually, and flipped it the other way. It's a black tube. The end of the rubber boot looks like something was connected in there. I retraced all the Vac lines and can't find what would have even connected to it possibly. Inside the tube was just dust. Every time I fart I find something on this car that needs to be looked at.

My biggest concern is my low vacuum and the P1675 code I've been chasing for the past 2 years. I'm wondering if it's related. I was actually pretty happy when the camshaft broke I was chasing ghost for a while. The car never popped a single code but the that emissions code, and when I drove I could tell something was seriously wrong with the engine. I had planned to park it that same weekend and do the LIM but it took care of that for me when it broke down. I looked over the car several times and and checked the valves best I could but of course with it being internal and no codes what can you do. FFS's why couldn't GM have spent the extra 2cents to put a freaking oil gauge on these cars, even the new buicks don't have an oil pressure but they have an RPM gauge on an auto? Why?. God forbid I almost over rev when I'm imaginary stick shifting my auto. Take that Honda boy come get some of this Lucerne...

ahh where was I? I was having a crazy day dream. First time I had an issue with the vac it pointed towards the EGR so I got brought like 3 from the local junk yard. Swapped and the code left but vacuum still sucked (great pun here). That's when I pulled the intake off and found a clog in the EGR port or (whatever they call that). Cleaned it out as well as the other vac points. the the car lost the code and ran like it should and then one day the cam started to fracture, and slowly started building up for the grand finally that left it in 2 pieces.

I still feel terrible about everything. Worse thing I ever did to this car was 1. Buy 2 cheap Dunlop tires when it was all I could afford, and 2. Even my own rule I broke when I ran the car to 5,500 miles on 5,000 mile rated oil when I didn't have time to change the oil because of work. I think that's what really brought the cam issue out. That oil change made me sick to my stomach there was so much metal on the plug I knew something was up. I love cars (except ricers) and I hate to run into a situation that could probably have been avoided like this .
