  • Stripped Crankshaft Bolt Hole

    Got most the cover back on as this is taking me a snails pace to put this car back together with work and all. I still have a good amount of thread left inside the crank, it looks like the puller just gnarled away at the some of the starting threads. IT should hold fine. Only problem is I can't find any place that seems to know the right size for the bolt. Any ideas on what size this thing is or if there's a kit for re threading the crank?

    Last time I had to bother with a tap was when I over torqued a stud on my new AFR head. I wanted to beat myself.

    The thread is M12 x 1.5. Be careful to get the tap straight and lined up properly should you need to use one.

      If you are lucky you can just run the tap down, then measure the hole depth and run a longer bolt. I had the same problem, my puller ruined the first 1/4" or so of my forged crank.. it's been fine for a few years now though.

        i also had this problem, but ive heard that to tap new threads into it you have to take it to a machine shop because the crank is forged. idk if thats true
        MODS: DS CAI, TCE 65 mm tb, TCE AFPR, TCE LS lifter springs, WOT ported UIM and LIM, 3500 heads, comp cams valve springs locks and retainers, 1393 grind cam, S&S headers, custom 2.5 in catback, flowmaster 80 series , no rez, and to top it all off, an MPR tune. Among misc gauges and appearence things

          They are using the tap strictly to clean out the existing threads, not to re-tap the threads. When I had this issue, I actually used a thread cleaner (??) instead of a tap.

            Yup a thread chaser will work better than a tap. The bolt goes pretty deep, if only the first few threads were ruined it should be fine.

              Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm having the damnest time finding a thread chaser, tap or whatever to fix this dang crank. What happened to autostores? They used to carry helpful stuff like this, now it's just isle full of useless crap like light up gas pedals, and neon lights.

                  I went to just about everywhere. The only strictly just auto stuff store around me is Napa, and it's an OLD one complete with dust on the shelves and probably original parts for the original 350 that no one ever purchased with 40's years of dust collected on it. They rarely have metric tools at this store and if they do their mark up there is like 80bucks. thank goodness for the internet and Amazoom to my door.

                    I know the feeling... $30 at the Napa by me for a helicoil set that was an odd size for a bolt on a Festiva a few years ago. I still have the whole set minus 1 coil...

                      Still having trouble tracking this thing down. I swear of all the dumb things I have done why did I end up stripping this bolt I should have known better. You get what you pay for...cheap ass autozone tool.

                        If you are still looking for a tap, try Enco. They sell lower end industrial quality tools and have a tap for $11.48 + shipping.
