  • Best puller for timing chain gears?

The lower timing chain gear is jammed on pretty good I used a conventional Ampro advanced auto tool and it at my crank threads even with the safety piece on there. Got the rest of the car together for the most part just want to get this job out the way and get the new gearset on. What's the recommend tool for the 3.1 gears. Usually I just tap the gear gently to move it a little then use the puller but that's not an option on this thing.

I spent hours and tried all kinds of pullers on a build a few years ago, nothing worked... i finally used an air hammer between the main cap and the gear, 5 seconds later it was off.

Thats what I did. Just grind until it fits behind. Use something aluminum or brass on the crank snout if your worried about damage.

I got it off in about 2 minutes with some new type of puller I picked up from Advanced auto. It kind of looks like a valve spring compressor tool. The puller was probably the best I have ever used. It says "power steering puller" on the case but it's the perfect size and fit to remove the the 3.1 timing gear. It cost me $25 bucks to rent/buy or what ever. It was a really well made tool, I probably would have kept it but I have enough pullers.

I love the loan-a-tool programs at parts stores

I bought a steering wheel and harmonic balancer pulley puller kit exactly like the one they rent for about $70 shipped (vs their $100) on ebay. I also decided to keep the cooling system pressure tester and adapters that I rented. Who ever decided to start that program should get a raise. I still use it often, but I take the tools back.

Yeah, it's pretty good. I always get my loaners from Advanced Auto they keep their stuff in better shape and most of the time it looks new. I used to get them from Autozone but I hate going on that store. All the loan tools look beat to death and most of the time they are missing the one piece you need.

Really just I hate going onto that store in general to ask any automobile related question like do you have this part or that part in stock. There's always one moron behind the parts counter there that likes to play mechanic and tell you about what you need. I once went in and asked for a flare wrench to get a fuel filter off. It was the very first thing I said to the guy. He has me walking around the store, picks up a fuel filter starts telling me how about how the fuel filter is assembled. I say to him thanks, but I need a FLARE WRENCH! to get the nut off, then he starts describing how the filter is designed and gets a a brake line hose and is telling me to use a fuel line tool to decompress the tabs in. By this time I'm bright red as a cherry. I had to ride my bike 5 Miles to this store and it was 101 degrees that day. My bike is a $1500 competition mountain bike that I only use in the mountains and I was annoyed I had to ride it on pavement (the tires cost me almost as much as car tires) and as he's running around the store I'm dragging my bike with me because there's a bunch of people in the store and I'm not interested in my bike walking off on me (I actually had someone steal parts I brought in right from the counter at that store once). I tell the guy thanks I appreciate him showing me but I just needed A FLARE WRENCH... F L A R E W R E N CH. He goes to the tool isle again and picks up the fuel filter tool that decompresses the line hose. I say no not that I have 3 of those already. Then he says oh, you might need a FLARE WRENCH. I swear my head must have popped off, that was the first thing I asked the guy when I first spoke to him 15 minutes ago. He looks where the Flare Wrenches should have been and says oh, we don't have any of those, you might want to try Napa. Yeah my fault for asking where the Flare wrenches were but they change the store around every other day.

                Gotta Love Autozone.

I usually try to keep the story short when I walk in. Do you have this part? "What's it for, what are you trying to do" I'm sorry I don't really have time to go into detail I just need to know if you have this part. "Okay yeah we have 2 in stock" Thanks I'll take one. Checkout and leave.

I feel your pain. There's a whole thread on Autzone and their service on TRS about their service, although you do give them a bit of credit... Just one moron behind the counter?

Service anywhere is declining. General morality is lost and people don't give a crap about their jobs anymore. Some people do care, like me and others on this forum, but 95% of all employed in the lower classes are just trying to get their day over with. Doesn't leave much to say about customer service.

Years back, when fuel pressure was failing and the car was struggling with misfires, I took it to the shop. Not knowing it was fuel pressure I needed help diagnosing at the time back when I was ignorant to engines. The tech open the hood and proceeded to spray water on the plenum where the plug wires were. "Oh yeah here is your problem, the spark plug wires are arcing when wet".... I promptly pulled the car from the shop. When I get my vehicles inspected, there is only 1 guy that is allowed to touch my cars....lol..... good ole Stevie. The only guy with enough common sense and know how to keep that shop open.

Btw this is the type of tool I used

Just the right size to get the 3.1 timing chain gear off. None of my SBC pullers would work because the SBC gear is much larger.
