Here's the story, I am converting to DIS and 165 ECU on my '85 camaro with a 3.4 gen 1 in it, reusing the 3.4's own DIS components, I had it firing, but would not start, it seemed like the fuel pump wasn't priming, I am almost certain it wasn't getting reference pulse off the ICM, at first I had thought the problem was in my ECU conversion(ie. that I wired something wrong) or maybe my DIS wiring, but after rechecking and trying various things to fix it, I found out about the distributor reference pulse and its function(I knew nothing about it till someone brought it up) I had however already suspected/felt as if the pump was only priming not running during cranking, and I know the pump is good(its new and the car ran on it before the swap) checked every inch of the lines for leaks.
Now here's where I am conflicted, I took the ICM in to autozone to have it tested, first off the guy running the test was a slow moving(lazy) idiot(why they hire guys like these but not me is beyond my comprehension) he actually hooked it up with the 5 and 3 pin connectors unhooked and started the test, I had to point out to him that he left those unplugged. The test showed it was good(but nobody that worked there could actually tell me if the test thoroughly tests all functions of the ICM, and I believe I have heard of people having similar types of parts test good when they were bad) anyways, after the test I took it home, hooked it back up, and without changing anything the car won't even fire now.
I'm looking for any input on the chances my ICM was bad all along, or maybe broke during the test, or that the test might be wrong, I do actually plan to try replacing it(was going to buy a new one to try, but apparently once installed you can't return them). But fortunately, my grandmother got a 96 corsica for me to borrow for school, and it happens to use the exact same ICM, so I am going to try putting the camaro ICM into that car and see what happens, might also tell me if the ICM in that car is bad....(see my stalling when cold thread...) But would still like any input anyone can shed, I have my car in queue for an appointment at a specialty shop that deals in these types of electrical conversions/updates to older cars, but hopefully the ICM is just bad...
