  • Illusive coolant leak.

I have a coolant leak on my motor somewhere and I cant find it. Its a VERY slow leak.

Engine is 3.1L MPFI. I noticed when looking under the car the other day and saw coolant drips kind of lingering on the starter and AC compressor. At this point I noticed the reservoir was low. I filled it and have since driven it for 2 days. reservoir is still at the same level. No temp lights heat works and all the hoses warm up, so the cooling system is full and not air locked.

Thing is I cant find the leak. the only place I see coolant is on the bottom of the AC compressor and the starter. Tops of them are dry and don't have the whitish residue that coolant typically leaves when it evaporates.

The weird thing is, the ac compressor being on the front of the engine and the starter on the back end, with a 6-7 inch gap in between both have coolant drips hanging from the bottom, with no real common gravity path to follow.

Only thing I can think of is the steel heater line that runs along the side of the motor near the rad. (last piece of the cooling lines I haven't replaced) might be leaking, as they show signs of rust, but do not show any signs of wet coolant.

It just baffles me because I see absolutely no tell tail signs of a leak, or gravity flow from a leak anywhere. And I cant think of anything that could get both the compressor and the starter wet without running over the tops of them.

Frost plug perhaps? But again I would expect to see something in a more dedicated area. And like I said this is a very slow leak.

Not puddles or drips under the car on the pavement. (except a bit of oil, but that's not a new problem).

I'm gonna go down to the car wash and spray down the underside of the engine bay tomorrow and watch it the next day or so to see if I can pinpoint it, but in the mean time, any ideas?

    thanks..

It sounds like the leak only happens when the coolant system is fully warmed up and pressurized. Another potential leak point is the front head gasket. Hosing the engine off is a good idea and I've heard of people applying a white powder to suspect areas after cleaning to help find leaks. Give the rad a close look too. It's possible the airflow while driving is blowing the coolant from a leaking rad onto the engine.
