  • Ignition timing 1983 2.8 V6?

    Hi to all!
I am having trouble setting the timing in a 1983 2.8 V6 engine. When i set the timing according to the engine sticker -wich is 10 degrees BTDC- the engine idles ok, but next time i shut it of i cant start it again, the timing seems to be too advanced. I wonder if there is a jumper or something to jump to properly perform the procedure or if there is a cranking signal to the ECM wich delays the timing while cranking.

    HELPPPP!!!

On an 83 it will be carb'd with a mechanical/vacuum advance distributor. All you need to do is disconnect the vacuum hose that goes to the distributor and then plug that hose with a large nail. Set the timing with the engine at hot idle. Once its set clamp it back down and reconnect the vacuum hose.

      Hello, thanks for the response.

The carb is the ECM controlled one.
My distributor does'nt have centrifugal or vacuum advance, just a HEI ignition system (the one with 7 pins). Should i disconnect a wire or something to perform the adjustment?
      Thanks.

Ok then yes I believe you pull the plug on the distributor.

The wires that come out of the distributor will go to a plug you can disconnect. Typically the wires are not very long.
