  • 2002 Buick Century, odd idle

Hello folks! My brother's been driving my Malibu so I've been trucking around in the Century from time to time and noticed that, when cold, the idle is very odd.

To be more specific, it goes up, down, up etc. The weird part is whenever you turn the steering wheel, it will either almost die or surge too high. After the car sits for more than a minute I don't really encounter this problem.
I really noticed the surging for the first time when turning the steering wheel when I was parking it in the garage.

No CEL's. Does the IAC valve need a cleaning you think? Or is something else up?

Cleaning the IAC and it's passage certainly can't hurt. Cleaning the MAF couldn't hurt either.

Did the MAF about a month ago. I am going to be getting a 65 mm tb on my Malibu soon.
Think I'll throw my 56 mm onto the Century and clean out the IAC then.

Posted because I was wondering if there could be any other culprit.
This car is crazy lately, abs engages all on it's own ever since it got rear ended. Of course no service vehicle soon lights and
have checked bearings and the abs pump multiple times..
Gotta love shooting in the dark!

Christine, is that you? lol ABS problems can be the worst, especially since they deal with a system that is really nice to have on a car- brakes. You might want to get that problem looked at with one of those tools that can view live data from each wheel while driving, or at least get a diagnosis on it. At the moment, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that would give an idle problem like that.

Excessive carbon buildup on the valves or dirty/drippy injectors can cause this. Also, by the ABS coming on, are referring to rear brake lock up or do you actually feel the ABS "buzzing" the brake pedal?

If you ain't rock and roll, you must be driving a Honda

Ahaha Thanks man. We got it scanned once and it showed all 4 wheels as the problem! So we cleared it and have been waiting for it to throw an SVS light again. It has and we're planning on getting it scanned again next oil change. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah I've seafoamed the top end, perhaps its time to pour some into the gas tank? The rear brake doesn't lock up, I just feel and hear the buzzing. Oddly enough sometimes it happens under regular driving conditions including acceleration. You'll just be accelerating and you'll hear it but it doesn't really do anything...very weird.
            Mostly during braking though.
