  • iron head positive seals

hey guys , i have a rwd 3.4l that im working on, replacing the valve seals. due to oil in exhaust port.
Reading the forums i notice that some recommend installing the felpro ss72527 positive seals on both intake an exhaust. an also using the black square cut oring in the 2nd groove on valve stem. is this correct?

also i read that some are using a ratail file on the exhaust positive seal to give it some artifical wear before installing it .to get more oil to exhaust valve.
Is this necessary? with the felpro positive seals ,or did this technique stem from teflon seals.

also ,if i used positive seals on exhaust valves should i remove the oil shield located under retainer? to get more oil to seal.

what do you think guys, Rob

Use Small Block Chevy Viton valve stem seals on all the valves. Keep the O-rings and ditch the umbrella under the retainer. If your doing any upgrades to the motor then install COMP Cams valve springs now. If it is all going to stay stock then just re use all the hardware.

If you want to put the spring on the you need:
        Valve Springs 980-12
        Steel Retainers 742-12
        Valve Locks 601-12

If you don't plan on doing a cam upgrade then don't lay out the cash for the springs because they wont help you. If you do want the cam upgrade then I would pick up the K kit right now and put in the springs, retainers and locks. They are all included in the kit.

BTY, I just checked comp's website and there they say the valve locks are for stock rebuilds with light valve loads. This does not sound like the recipe for a cam upgrade. Am I wrong or...??
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

No they are goo locks. You will be fine. They are just talking about springs with 150 lbs on the seat or more.
