Now it just got really strange. I WAS getting fuel. Now I am not. I used the test wire by the fuel pump relay, and the pump runs, but will not even register on my fuel pressure gauge. Sprayed in carb cleaner, and it started up. Could the pump just been on the edge of going bad when the pickup coil quit? I hate dropping the fuel tank. Has anyone just plumbed in an external fuel pump?

Hmm probabally not the pump. Take the regulator apart and inspect it. You should find your problem.

Is the regulator in the throttle body the one you are talking about? I had the inlet line disconnected from the TBI unit and plumbed directly to a fuel pressure gauge.

          Yes that regulator.

So you plumbed a guage to a dead end on the supply?

Well if you have no pressure and the pump turns then take the tank out (or bed off if you have a pickup) and be sure the pickup tube has not come off the pump. Also check any of hte plastic/rubber tubes for cracks. Replace whatever is necessary. Usually it is not the pumps fault if the pump runs.

I'll do that. This truck has 200,000 + miles.Do you think it's good preventive maintenance to replace it since it is such a B-dog to get to? The pump is 40 dollars.

The pump is out of the blazer. The short hose that connects the pump to outlet fitting is cracked and dissolving. The hose is like tar. What kind of hose is this? What material should I replace it with? This vehicle may "grow" an access cover over the pump.

LOL goto A dealer and get the whole assembly. Looks like its turning to mush.

Do you, or have you ever used Shell gasoline?

I dunno what the PO used. I have driven the truck around the block and this happened. I picked up a replacement fuel pump, and the "sock" for the end of it. The pump came with a new hose and clamps. The old "sock" was split, and there was black crud in the outflow pipe of the old pump. Now to decide if I want to cut an access hatch in the floor so the tank doesn't have to be dropped again.

Well replace it all and you will be good for many many years to come. Dont cut a hole in the floor. That is bad practice.

A few year back Shell gas was eating up pumps and senders in fuel tanks. Chrysler products reacted the worst. The Chrysler dealership next to my dads work was replacing 4 in tank units a day. My dads work only had about 1 a week. Shell however has fixed the problem and I believe was reimbursing people for repair bills.

I practiced removing the pump on a tank at the self service junkyard before I attempted mine. That pump had an ate up hose too. I have heard that "gasahol" blends will destroy fuel lines too. The access hatch idea involved cutting through a support channel, and matching a "corrugated" section of floor. Just as much work as dropping the tank. My '50s dodge army truck not only has a hatch to access the sending unit, it also has a petcock to drain the tank.

Yea petcocks use to be found on alot of vehicles. I wouldn't doubt that the gasahol blends ruin fuel systems. They are just shitty forms of gasoline all togeather

Gasahol is supposed to burn out 2 stroke engines. There was also an article in a car mag about someones custom fiberglass fuel tank turning to mush and making a mess of the fuel system. I think it has to labeled at the pump now. I got the tank back in it and it fired off, finally. I just have to pull the timing wire and set the timing.
                          THANKS EVERYBODY!!!!!

                            Cool
Glad to her its working. You are not the first person I have helped that had a broken pickup in the tank.
