  • Oil consumption on a 3100

    Hey everybody!
My father has a 94 Beretta with that 3100 engine in it. It currently has around 89,000 miles on it. He drives it back and forth from Grand Rapids, MI to Marion, IN (courtesy of GM). Everytime he drives back and fourth he has to put at least a quart and a half of oil in the thing. We take very good care of this car ever since we bought it. It had 69,000 on it when we got it. I've looked countless times underneath and can't see where he would be losing oil. Any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks in advance.

Could be bad valve guide seals or piston rings.

That would make sense but it boggles me that it uses oil like that and it doesn't have that many miles on it. are these engines known for something like that? the bad seals?

These engines are known to be pretty reliable outside of the lower intake gasket problem. A compression test can tell you if it the rings have too much clearance.

No problem. Did the car ever sit for a really long time without running?

I would have to say oil pump drive seal, I had a similar problem with mine until I did the lower intake gaskets and the oil pump drive seal while everything was out of the way and the o-ring seal was brittle and leaking at 98,000 miles

yes but he said oil CONSUMPTION.. not oil leakage

when time and weather are permitting I would pull the upper and lower intake and replace the lower intake gaskets and replace the oil pump drive gear o-ring.

                      my $0.02

If they are the original gaskets and o-ring it's only a matter of time until you need to upgrade these.
