  • weird sound from (exhaust manifold?)

I finnally got the 3.1 in my lumina running decently. still a couple problems.

Changed the TB and that solved my hesitating and stalling, and the temp sending unit fixed the dim temp light and the car thinking it was overheating. Now the cooling system functions properly and the car starts much much better. (it dawned on me that the cavalier i took the engine from had a temp guage not a light, thus different sensor)

There is a vacuum leak that i can hear near the rear corner of the engine compartment, driver side. I think its the accessory line as its the only one I havent replaced.

And the MIL light comes on occationaly, usually when I 'give er' to pass someone. Which I have been thinking is the vac leak.

I can hear the vacuum with the hood open and can hear the vacuum escaping from inside the cab when the engine is killed, though muffled so I assume its a leak in the engine compartment and what im hearing is the vacuum equilizing in the HVAC system.

So I was under the hood listening to the leak and I heard a weird noise coming from the rear of the engine, sounds muffled and seems to be coming from the exhaust manifold.
The sound is similar to the weird echoish pop heard when smacking the end of a length of steel or PVC pipe. not sure what it is but I definately didnt hear it before, could this be a sticking valve? doesnt sound like a misfire or backfire or anything to that effect and the sound is only apparent if you put your ear right near the rear quarters of the engine compartment towards the manifold near the O2 sensor and down pipe.

The engine has a bit of an akward idle. Starts cold and idles about 800, and after driving a while it drops to about 500 - 600, no weird noises, no missing, no hesitating just slow idle, slow and smooth. I wouldnt have even noticed it if I hadnt installed the Tach. Also the odd time I start it after it has been sitting for a few hours, the idle creeps to 1100 - 1200 and sits there, once in gear idles high for a bit but then seems to level off at 1000, and eventually drops to 600ish. Again idle is smooth and the only noticable effect is that it moves faster when the break is released.
Im thinking this is the symptom of the vac leak.

any ideas on the leak and sound? are they related?
