  • EEEEWWW that smell

It's been over 2 months and 900 miles since I swapped a 2000+ 3400 heads, intakes, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, and throttle body onto my 1997 3100 engine. I'm happy with the MPG (from 26 to 31-32 mpg) and performance end of things. The engine does not miss, studder, shake, shimmy or overheat...BUT.......
Since this swapp there has been an off and on odor of anti-freeze coming from the interior vents since the swapp and i've added about a quart of anti-freeze over the 2 months. I start to smell it just as the temperature gauge starts to rise to operating temp of 180.
Have i got a leaking heater core maybe?.....Tom

Sounds like the heatercore. The cooling system pressurizes as it warms up. Check under the floormats for wet carpet spots or under the car for drops of antifreeze. Hosing down the spot where you park with water is a good way to find anti-freeze as it usually foams up.

Thanks Azael. Today going to work i did not smell antifreeze, but maybe on the way home. Like i mentioned on and off. There was a drip of antifreeze coming from where that rubber condinsation orifice on the left passenger side of the firewall of my Monte is but it stopped dripping hours after the upgrade. I believe i'll hang an empty soup can from this orifice for a while and see what i catch. God i hope it's not a head gasket. I really never liked the idea of the 3400 head gaskets and the way they sat on the 3100 block leaving that small gap between the 3100 cylinder and the 3400 head gasket.
