  • 2000 Gran Prix 3100 secondary air pump

Chasing down the cause of a 0410 code I removed the secondary air pump and hoooked it up to 12v; didn't run. Took it apart and freed up the impeller (after dumping the water out) and now it runs. Put it all back together and tested again with a twelve volt source. Now it's back in the vehicle and I want to test it as installed but I can't get any good information from the fuse and relay compartments covers or the factory service manuals as to what fuse protects it and what relay drives it. The instruction in the manual says it's relay 10 for the pump but the illustrtion in the manual sure doesn't look like this vehicle. The manual shows the underhood electrical center to be over by the master cylinder. On this vehicle it's on the opposite side of the engine next to the washer resevoir. And the fuse/relay illustration in the manual looks nothing like the layout of the my electrical center. I pulled every fuse in both fuse panels that I thought had any description that might be related to the pump but found none blown. There should be a blown fuse from the locked rotor pump. Anybody got any information that's relevant? Thanks.

I did find the culprit in making the pump wet. I guess you know, it was one of the air check valves. I saw it was wet as soon as I pulled the hose off. I took it apart and the vane for the check valve fell onto the floor. Guess they're only good for so many operations before the metal fatigues.

After reinstalling the pump and replacing the air check valve it seems to all operate as is supposed to. There is vacuum to the valves and the pump operates for about 90 seconds then the vacuum is gone and the pump stops running. Never did find the fuse or the relay, Hard to understand that a locked rotor on the pump wouldn't blow a fuse. The troubleshooting guide for the Secondary Air Pump in the Sevice Manual points to a 30 amp fuse labled AIR. I did find that. The manual also points to the relay in a location that doesn't exist on this vehicle but further browsing in the manual brought me to an illustration of the connector layout for the relay which led me to think that the relay is a stand alone component somewhere under the hood. I searched for about 20 minutes but had no luck finding it. I had an Autotap hooked up to my laptop while starting and running the vehicle and initiailly, listed under the Possible Cause Codes was the 0410 code which I witness disappear. I think the Check Engine light will go out after a few more runs. Something kinda weird happened while the car was in the garage, running in Park. Suddenly a 1811 (transmission shift) code appeared. - Scotty
