  • Still More Questions On My '99 3100 Teardown

I've tried to locate the Timing Marks on the Dampener but have been unsuccessful. I'm trying to not have to remove the front timing cover, dampener, as I only want to replace the head gaskets,
Does anyone have a Pic of a 3.1 L82 with these marks they could send me?
I searched the Net and found the following bad news:
"The L82 ("M-code") was an updated, SFI version of the MPFI LH0, produced from 1993 through
    1999
I checked the FM and found that when installing the rockers, the L82's have to be rotated to #1 and #4 firing position to set Valve Lash at no lash plus 1.5 turns.
I'm trying to not have to remove the front of the engine. I don't even know if it can be dons as removing the Dampener looks pretty damn tight.
As always, any help is much appreciated.

3x00 rockers don't require lash to be set. Just torque them to spec and go.

      Thank you!
I saw somewhere during my surfing that the Rocker Arm Nut Torque Specs have been revised.
If so, what are the new Specs?

I Removed a Rocker assembly from cylinder #1. Seemed like it need a lot more torque than 18 Lb Ft to remove it.
Is a thread locker required on reassembly? I don't remember seeing it called for in the FM procedure.

Also, the Spec Section of this Site calls for:
        Rocker Arm Bolt 89 +30°

Other Sites have very different values.
        __________________________________________________ ____________
        Example:

Connects: Rocker Arm To Cylinder Head
        Years: 1998-2002 Vote Record: Vote
        Note: 3100 - Rocker Arm Bolts - 2 Steps: 14 FtLbs(168 Inch Lbs; +30deg
        __________________________________________________ _____________

The FM calls for 18 Ft Lbs. or 216 Inch Lbs. with no angle torque added.
I want to use the latest procedure for reliability. It took too much work to get to these rockers.

        TIA,

GM used two different rocker setups in the 3100's. The older, small-port version mostly used a pivotball rocker setup while the new, large-port one and the later year small-ports used roller fulcrum rockers. Torque specs are different for each.

89lbs-in + 30 degrees for the pivotball rockers
14 lbs-ft + 30 degrees for the roller fulcrum rockers

Appreciate the reply, the more info the better.
I definitely have the later roller fulcrum rockers. It is a '99 3.1 Litre.
The angle torque concerns me. Isn't it usually used for Torque-To-Yield bolts?
I can see now how setting valve lash would be all but impossible given the setup.
When I removed some of the rockers using my torque wrench, I had about
337 Inch/Lbs (approximate because it was in reverse) to
break them loose, so I was concerned.
Should I use the FM Dealer Thread Sealant, or is there a cheaper alternative?
I prefer Form-A-Gasker #2 on gaskets as it never hardens.
But I'm open to suggestions on alternate thread sealants.
Again, thanks to all for the help.
