  • clear check engine light

Can I clear the check engine light on an OBDII system (96 Lumina) by unplugging the battery or do I need to take it somewhere that has a code reader to get it cleared?

I've fixed the problems I think, and now I need the codes cleared.

    Thanks,
    Joel

Need to take it somewhere to clear the codes (AFAIK). Pep Boys or someone like that should be able to do it for free.

Thanks. I thought that was the case with OBDII.

If you leave the battery disconnected overnight, the light should go off, but the codes will remain in memory. If you don't care about the codes being in memory, and just want the light off, you can safely just disconnect the battery.

I'll give that a try. Basically, I need to know if I've fixed the problems that caused the light to come on originally. I think I have. So if I disconnect the battery, the light will go off if I've fixed the problems that brought it on in the first place, if not, the light will come back on.

I'll try it in the morning.

          Thanks
