  • Problems after new engine install

I have been helping my cousing install a used motor in his '96 chevy lumina with a 3.1. The reason is because he ran the car through high water and it sucked water into the engine and now the engine has a bad knock.

Anyway, he bought a salvage yard motor with "90,000 miles" on it from a '96 Grand Am. We changed over everything externally that was different between the motors.

To get to my question..... It is not running right. It does not seem to have the power that it should. When cruising in OD, if you stomp on the gas, it used to downshift noticibly and accelerate quickly. It feels like a dog now. There were three codes in the computer (check engine light is on). P0300, P1650, P1655. We found after initially starting it (It ran really bad) that two spark plug wires were on the wrong plugs. I fixed that. So that should take care of the P0300. I also found where two connectors on the purge valve were not on the right spot. I fixed this and think that fixed the P1655 code. We haven't cleared the codes yet. He then drove it and it was idling at 2200rpm. It wouldn't come down. I then shut it off and restarted it and it idled at 900rpm.

I'm wondering if there are some electrical problems going on, or if the transmission got affected by the water, or if the computer has issues due to the water....... Any truth to the rumor that the computer needs to be changed?

Sorry for the long post. Any ideas will be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Joel

Not sure about your motor but many of these computers enter a limp-home mode when codes are on the computer. That might explain the slightly weak performance and even the fast idle? Try clearing them and see if any come back or if your performance improves

After clearing the EMC of codes you might want to try an idle relearn to.
