  • replace crankshaft 7x sensor on 98 lumina L82 eng

I have a 98 lumina 3100 L82 engine and need to replace the 7x crankshaft position sensor. I can see it but can't figure out how to get a tool in to pull it out and replace it. Does anyone have the service manual that yo could post the page or two with description on how to do this. I have attached a picture of what I think is the sensor. I cannot figure out how to get a wrench or socket in the spot so maybe the book tells how to do it.

Also it says in the haynes manual I have to take the car to the dealer and have them do crankshaft position sensor variation learning procedure. Can I do that at home as well and if so how?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Service manual wont help, just says remove lol.

I have used a combination of extensions and flex' or just reach in with 1/4" tools.

I have a hoist though which makes it simpler.

This needs to be done via a TECH2,
so either a dealer or a shop/someone with one.

Have you had the CKP Variation relerned?
If not, do you happen to have an Elm scanner?

                    Glad you got it replaced!

did not need the CKP relearning as the engine seems to be doing fine so far. If I need to at a later point, I have found a local place that will do it for me.

Cool, if you get a chance to pick up an ELM327 scanner, they are quite cheap now on EBay, I have found the commands to relearn the Variation and can walk you through it.

I think the pcm re-learn is only necessary if the 24x reluctor ring in the crank pulley was moved or replaced. The 7x sensor has no adjustability so it should produce an accurate signal so long as it's working and installed correctly.

I am not having much luck locating the sensor. Could someone be a little more specific about its location? I have a 2001 Lumina with the 3.1.

Would it be easier to put the car up on ramps to get at the sensor? (I don't have a jack or lift).

Also, I did read you only need the relearn if you change the 24x sensor, not the 7x sensor.
