  • Signs of the dreaded LIM leak

I'm considering purchasing a 2000 Malibu (3100) from a friend. It's got around 163k miles. I went and gave it a once-over today, giving the coolant and oil a very critical eye. Neither showed signs of the other in it, though the oil was quite dark and clearly in need of being changed. I did see what I can only describe as jellied Dexcool pooled on top of the transmission case. She told me that the water pump had "blown up" at some point and she had it replaced, and that the water temperature was quite high when that happened, but that the mechanic hadn't mentioned any problems with either the head or intake gaskets.

As I said, the telltale signs of LIM gasket failure—milky oil, oily coolant—weren't there, but it's obviously been leaking coolant a bit for some time. It's got some other cosmetic issues (rear bumper is missing, RR window is off the track) and badly needs tires, so I felt that $1000 was a fair offer, and she accepted. I'm waiting for a couple W2 forms to show up so I can get my taxes done and get the beefy refund, but in the meantime, I've been trying to research the 3100's known issues. I haven't had any problems with the MFI engine in the Celebrity, so I'm something of an SFI noob.

Is the pool of orange jelly a sign of something serious, or should I just keep an eye on the coolant and oil once I get it? Also, I drove it a bit, and it behaved well, and I was able to take first gear to at least 40 mph before it shifted. Is that a 3.06 or 2.93 final drive, or somewhere in that range?

Sometimes the LIM gaskets will let what I describe to non car people as snot on the bottom of the oil fill cap. The pool could have been from a leak elsewhere (hopefully), but if I were you, the first thing I would do is change those gaskets out if they aren't the metal ones and she has never had them changed before.

LIMG fails, leaks either inside or outside the motor. But yes the LIMG needs addressing before it leaks inside... Go with the metal ones and you won't have to do it ever again.

My car goes to about 48mph before it goes to 2nd, 2.94 FDR, 25" tires. So that sounds right, probably the same FDR or higher.

Slight subject change. The Malibu has the 4T40 transmission, doesn't it? What's the service interval? I have no idea of the maintenance history of this car. Can a DIYer do it, or do I have to have a shop do it since it's a "sealed unit"?

if by sealed unit, you mean that there is no filler tube for the tranny, then you'll have to get under it and unscrew the drain plug and do it that way. FUN!

4T40's are sealed? If it's not a "sealed" unit, standard change interval is every year or 12k miles according to most sources I've seen.

Yeah, I know that one. All my cars have been dinosaurs prior to this one though, so I don't know much about servicing it.

I'm with you, that seems really really stupid. But then again, how long have we had GM vehicles? LIM gasket design (3x00 and DOHC) anyone? lol

After doing some more research, it seems that the coolant seepage at the rear of the engine is in fact the LIM gasket gone bad. I'm still going to get it though, and I'm gonna see if I can talk her down a couple hundred. Honestly though, even at a thousand bucks, it's not that bad of a deal, especially since you'd be hard pressed to find a Cavalier in Las Vegas for a grand.

                      swap the engine. since its a 2000, a 3400 is a 'plug n play!'

Right, but is the transmission up to the task of an extra ten horses and fifteen foot-pounds?

sure some of us got ( me included) got engine stronger then a 3400 attached to a 4t60e.I think the trans in your car is a little bit stronger then the 4t60e. you have to be careful about one wheel burnout.

                            4t40 is NOT stronger than a 4t60...

Yeah, one wheel peels make quick work of diff pins, regardless of the FWD unit.
