  • 02 Grand Am GT Throttle Problem 3.4L

Vehicle is a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT with the 3.4L V6. 100K on odo.

The throttle 'bounces' from like 1500-2000RPM. It started at speeds roughly between 45-55MPH with throttle around 1500-2000RPM.

Then it progressed to do it from 1000-3000RPM at any speed from 2nd gear and up.

It seems to do it with a certain amount of pressure on the gas pedal. It began after the starter was recently replaced.

What could be causing the 'bouncing' of the throttle?

    Crank Positioning Sensor?

You may have disturbed it, or the plug when messing with the starter.

How would I go about checking to see if the crank positioning sensor was disturbed?

Wouldn't a check engine light be on if it was the crank position sensor?

Do your own Throttle Body Cleaning/Service and see if you can replace the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and IAC (Inlet Air Control) Valve. When the IAC Valve gets dirty and gritty... it can stick and release and cause the fluctuations in the amount of air being pulled into the TB...making a normally even idle... "Do the Huckelbuck". If your CPS hold down fastener is loose... and/or the Sensor harness connector got knocked loose during the Starter Change...the sensor pick up from the crank might behave strangely, too. Don't rule out a clogged Fuel Filter and/or Fuel Pump problems...
