  • Silvolite Pistons... 2 HEAVY? Or 2GOOD2BTRUE?

This offer on eBay seems too good to be true... (Six New Pistons with Wrist Pins for under $50.00) although the images and specs seem to bear out that they would work. I've never heard of Silvolite Pistons B4 and some light research reveals that they are cast vs hypereutectic and tend to be very heavy slugs. Also...Keith Black sells them (or did) and they have quench issues that could be problematic. Does anybody have the dope on these pistons that could allay my suspicions as to why these can be bought for under Fifty Bucks?

I'm sure once the auction gets going, they will end up going for upwards of $150. Silvolite has been around for a long time.

yeah, i'm young, and even after looking through a Summit Racing catalog once, i knew what Silvolite was...

"CURRENT JOBBER NET ON THESE PISTONS IS $34.34 EACH, $206.04 FOR THE SET"

      seems about right.

Surprisingly enough... they have a dual listing that will let me buy the set for $49.00... right now... and I will probably do it...just to have a set to go in the engine that is soon to come out of the 1994 Camaro... I was just reluctant to get swindled by something that seemed too EZ and for just a little moolah, too. They do have sets for the 3.1 and 3.8 that seem just as low being offered by the same Sellor... a search on eBay using "Silvolite GM ...etc..." will show everyone what is available.

What the Hell... I grabbed them just for drill. The set I got are 0.75 mm OS so if I decide to tidy up the old block at .030" just to clean up and square the cylinders...they will come in handy later.

I keep seeing 3100 and 3400 Top Ends a Splayed Valved Heads on eBay, too...also for not too much moolah... John (FF) Isaac, Superdave... and many others have made some encouraging comments about throwing on the "Aluminum" top end and so forth...and I must admit... I am tempted to investigate this...but am I wrong in assuming none of this FWD stuff can be bolted on without entering into "The Land of Toon"...to make it all run and gain a little HP?

I think the "Lil' Woman" has something like a "moly-graphite anti-friction coating" spray in her makeup kit... Maybe I can spritz the skirts on these six, cheap slugs down with the powdered stuff... and hope for the best...

                    Okay...

The Set of Six (6) Silvolite Pistons for $49.00 just arrived and they look perfectly BeeNib (Brand New...In the Box). I took some snaps of the data on the box end and since there was an interesting and useful installation sheet inside as well ...I scanned that for anyone intending to re-build a 3.4L engine that does not possess that special "Machinist-Engine Building Brain Lobe" and institutional memory of these facts the likes of Ben (WOT-Tech), Superdave, CNCguy and the redoubtable John (Forced Firebird) have lodged deep inside their coconuts. The data shown on the sheet covers more situations than just the installation of this piston set and is worth tucking away somewhere for future reference.
