  • Question : need some advice

I just finished reassembling my 3.1l engine after replacing all the intake manifold gaskets. just as I was putting the coil pack back in to place, I reached under the coil to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything but when I did I felt what seems to be a short 90 degree rubber hose that has nothing connected to it. I didn't remove anything from that so I am unsure what its for.

    any help would be appreciated.

The only 90 degree elbow piece I can think of off the top of my head is for the pcv valve on the front valve cover other than that theres a much longer plastic piece that goes into the back valve cover, to the intake track, under the coil mounting plate.

yeah I i know what you mean there and those appear to be fine. there are 2 brackets that bolt on the same studs (the coil pack and another black box) well on the bottom of the black box this little tube appears to hang underneath and isn't connected to anything. The car barely starts and runs horribly, I don't know if that could be the issue or maybe an injector or something.

that's probably the end of the tube that's supposed to attach to the vapor purge solenoid. Look for the black sensor attached to the bracket that sits just under the coil pack.

I think you are right on the money. The only problem is that the boot is connected to the box under the coil pack and its got dust in the end which leads me to belive there was nothing connected to the 90 degree rubber boot before I started the job. What would this do to the engine?

Check to make sure there's no other open "ports" as I believe one port on the solenoid stays open to atmosphere. At the very least there should be two ports with hoses attached- one coming from the "backup" solenoid (small cylinder next to it) and one going to the vacuum line that is attached to the upper intake manifold.

If it were not connected you'd have a large vacuum leak which would have caused idle and driveability issues, among other things.
