  • 88 2.8 TBI starts fine one minute, won't start fine the next

Hi guys. Hopefully you can help me with my problem. In my 88 Jimmy, the truck will crank, then it feels like its starting, then it will die, and will do this repeatedly until the battery dies. The truck has a brand new gas tank, fuel pump, pump screen, battery and battery cables. I checked all of my vacuum connections and all are connected, all of my ignition wires are tight. This morning when I jumped the truck and started it it started right up, no problems and ran fine, revved fine. I have never actually driven the truck as I had bought it beat and am in the process of getting it running again. After I got it running this morning, i let it idle for a while to get the battery charged, and after it got up to operating temp, started misfiring then died. It then did the exact same thing as before, cranking bet never starting. I know it has fuel, and I know it has spark because it is trying its hardest to fire up, but it won't stay running. When the truck did start, it threw a SES light for a little while, then it went away.

Its odd that it'll start when jumped and run up to operating temp, and then die. That would lead me to believe it would have something to do with closed loop operation (O2 sensor, ECM, etc). But the fact that it doesn't start with a charged battery kinda nixes that. But it may be a spot to start looking...

I tried it again while bieng jumped by another car, and it still wouldn't start. I don't think it has anything to do with operating temp because it also did this when it was cold one day [the motor, not the weather]. I think I may have a bad main engine ground, I am going to try and clean up the ground connection better. I figure even with the current old wires/plugs it should still run fine if at random it runs perfect then at other times won't start and barely runs for 3 seconds misfiring badly. Leads me to believe the coil could be bad. Does anyone have a link to checking SES codes?
