  • These are a GR8 Help in the Garage!

Whether you're a Novice Wrench... or a Master Mechanic... You can't do any jobs in the shop or garage or work on your cars, engines and other projects without eventually having to reach for a paper towel or a cloth of some kind to either wipe off your hands... or wipe up the mess.

This universal need often presents itself with having to unravel, unroll or wade through roll after roll of paper towels... or suffer the indignity of having your Wife "Drop you like a Turd from a Tall Indian..." when she catches you raiding the linen closet to find the last vestige of the Guest Towels she paid $4.95 a piece for! But you know how it is... when you need something to wipe off those filthy hands...you'll use whatever you can get your hands on!

The Handy Shop Solution enters from Stage Left in this scene as a 24 Pack of "Clean-Rite" Over-Sized Terry Cloth Shop Towels that you can get from Home Depot for anywhere between $6.00 to $8.00 per 24 Qty package. Just imagine grabbing three packs of these "Handy" and HUGE towels for a fraction of what you would pay for a few 12 Packs of Paper Towels and having them "Handy" as help for every imaginable Dirty Job you can think of... and that includes saving that favorite Tee-Shirt of yours from being destroyed by a plate full of Spaghetti or that other favorite of yours...those BBQ Baby-Back Ribs!

They are made of Pure White Cotton and can be Machine Washed and Bleached for many in-the house uses as well; great for everything from counter wipers to face and hand towels... and in my case... as a Landscape Artist, I use them to clean up my canvases, brushes, color oils and odorless paint thinner. And because they are always plentiful and inexpensive, I can just toss them when they've served their many purposes.

There may be other stores like Loews that may also carry these GR8 "Clean-Rite" Shop Towels, too. Hope this idea is helpful to those who have not found them in their local stores... yet. The attached image shows a size comparison between one of the "Clean-Rite" Shop Towels and your more common style Terry Cloth Hand Towel.

And when you need to wash and bleach all that grease and grime out, head for the local laundramat, because your wife will de-ball you if you use her washing machine.

I forget why I know this!!!

i got a bunch of the shop cloths awhile back from work.
i usually just throw them in a box and then do them all at once. do the same thing with the ones i wax the car with although those are the soft terry cloth ones.

Lucky for me the washer and dryer is down here in the basement close to where I hang out, not upstairs where she roams Harbor Freight was selling a 50 pack of the red shop towels for $9.99, but I passed because they looked a little thin for what I use towels for.

I know what I'm about to describe will "Date" me...so to speak, but when you break the Big 60 (and I don't mean in Degrees, either) you can't really do much to conceal your age... Anyhoo... back in the early 70's when Polyester was the New Cotton and everybody was sporting wide collars, platform boots and bell-bottom trousers...some Genius who tired of his wardrobe decided to use one of those old shirts in the kitchen to clean up some food stains...some of which included cooking oil.

Long story short (and you know how hard that little trick is for me to pull off) The Genius happened to throw the old Polyester Peter Frampton style used cloth into the washer and drier and that's when his problems began. Just from the heat alone...the chemical mix of the Polyester and organic food oil exploded into a huge fireball and set the place ablaze. So ever since then..I've been shy of washing then drying (open electric heating coils) anything that gets ANY kind of oil, gas or volatiles on them for fear of a similar response. I can always by more terrycloth towels.

God... too many of my posts of late have had such an overtone of a hyper-vigilance to fire hazards... I'm gonna have to take up Ice Sculpture instead of Oil Painting! LOL

most of the time i just wipe on my pants. when they get too stained i throw em out. lol but i have alot of old socks and stuff i use. not for waxing. only microfiber for taking it off.
for the interior, i just wash my car and use the chamois to wipe off the dash and crap while its still damp.

In the garage, I tend to use a lot of the thick blue paper towels you buy at the parts store (made by Scotts I believe). I use them for wiping all sorts of stuff because they are nice and thick (not prone to busting through), soaking up some stuff, wiping things down and general cleaning. No worries about 'sploding my house I don't normally wipe a lot of stuff on my pants, especially if I have a rag handy.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say I never wipe my hands on my pants, because that would be an all out lie, lol. I just try to find a rag first if I have to wipe my hands that bad.

thats why i wear black dickies when ever im doing something that requires getting dirty.
id destroy a normal pair of jeans in like 5 minutes.

if im out at the junkyard or working outside the pants are my towel. but back in the garage its a mix of both pants and towels. im not gonna lie too much but im gonna say its mostly me wiping my hands on my pants.

never had an issue of anything remotely catching on fire in the house. even when i changed the fuel pump/float in the subaru with the door shut and the furnace in the garage( this is at my house). iirc it was the middle of winter.

lol @ -9C i drove my car home, leaking coolant. got it in the garage (hot) and sat down... sulked a little. smoked a bong and ate supper. smoked another bong (or three) and went out to look at the damage to the car. while under there i touched the engine, wasnt hot... wasnt cold. was just nice n warm. hmmmm thoughts start brewing as i looked over at the toolbox i was parked beside. tools already out and still not put away from the last thing i fixed (last month) i cracked the lower rad hose housing open, and it was going so nice. grabbed the can of gasket maker and set it on the engine plaque to defrost a little as the garage isnt heated and had it all done (in POOR light at best) and not leaking ready to roll. lol doesnt seem to have any problems. though my fuel mileage blows now. -noticed some low tires though, gotta check em at the shop tomorrow.
ugh why did i type that much?

Maybe its because of the good stuff your putting in that bong???
