  • Question : 3.4 starting problem

wow...I am in the Pushrod area! I feel so dirty!

Enough of that. My Camaro runs perfect. 1 small problem. It will not start when cold untill the 3rd crank. When I stole,(I mean bought)it, it started on the 3rd crank, and ran like s***! The owner said it is the fuel pump. I paid my $1800, drove it home, stopped at Autozone and got a set of good Bosch wires. Ran perfect. Hence the steal.

But, when cold, it still will not start till the 3rd crank! Here is a hint...On the 2nd crank, I hear a small backfire under the hood, very light, but it is there. Then, on the 3rd crank, it roars to life. Every time! I tried this thing from another forum, turning the key on and off 3 times. No change. Bleedback to tank was suspect. Could it still be a weak fuel pump?

And not to be "stupid noob" or anything, is this called a 3.4?

        Yeah we call it a 3.4 since it's not a 3400 or a 3.4TDC /DOHC

        It's a gen1 3.4L. The manifold looks like a U...

Anyway, is the FPR leaking into the vacuum line? Is the fuel pressure in spec?

I know the LQ1. Fuel filter changed. I'll do a fuel pressure test. Interesting. Could fuel actually getting in early? In a vacuum line? Makes sense. Like I said, this is new to me. I'll get into it. Thanx.

You should feel so dirty right now... Like, Tijuana crack whore dirty...

Dennis knows the LQ1. If you have ever seen Ben's round up of cars, look at his Cutty (not the convertible one) and then look at Dennis' name.

You don't indicate if the cranking process sounds like you might be having a problem with a starter going bad. When you are trying to start the engine... does the starter wind the motor up at a pretty good clip...or is it laggy and groaning?

Take of the FPR vacuum hose off the "Top Hat" and sniff it (Carefully...now...) if you smell gasoline...then the FPR bladder is leaking and its "Tits-Up"... Try to find a replacement that is used... the "BeeNib" (Brand New...In The Box) OEM ones run just under $400.00 (Yikes!)
