I'm replacing the timing chain on a 3100 in my 97 Grand Am, and the is no timing marks on the camshaft gear. What would be the correct positioning using the key as a reference point? for example should the key be pointed straight down twords the crankshaft? straight up away from it? of to the right? or what. Thanks in advance.

Look for dots on the gears and make sure they are aligned, as shown in the above image.-Brad-

So correct me if I'm wrong here, the camshaft alignment pin should be a 3 o'clock and the sprocket locator hole at 6 o'clock as shown in the graphic, or am I missing somthing?
Are they reffering to the sprocket locator hole as the "timing mark", because I have been looking for a dot on one of the teeth like the one on the crankshaft, but no such dot exists.

Yes, the locator hole is what needs to line up with the dot. When this is done, the crank and cam keyways will be as shown in the diagram.-Brad-
