Be careful with the cylinder head choice. MPFI and TBI iron heads are different. All TBI engines received the small valves (except maybe the 3.4L crate motor), all MPFI engines received the HO heads with larger valves.

Exactly because its completely wrong. All HO carb'd engines and Iron Head engines after 86 had large valves.

Folks,

I'm an ex-Boomer Puke myself. ET SINS. 656 Gold. Groton. Holy Lock for deployments.

In my previous posts I kept calling the failed head the '..starboard' head. I guess the more correct nomenclature would have been the 'odd side'. Or, the Brits would call it the 'curb side'.

Meanwhile, I spent the day running around gathering parts. To avoid disappointment, I ordered heads with the same GM part number. I hope they arrive before the weekend.

My neighbor and I also started troubleshooting the A/C. The kid I bought the car from admitted that the car's A/C never worked. The compressor was obviously very tight, and someone had cut the belt off long ago. My neighbor is a A/C whiz, so is teaching me how to deal with these common Harrison R4s. The clutch on the compressor has led a rough life, and the culprit was a seized clutch bearing. I've got a new AC Delco part on order and hopefully there are no other A/C problems. I'm fooling myself - never that easy.

im not even sure what port and starboard are... lol drivers side, passenger side? left and right... but either way, for $300 for that car, i would have jumped on it SOOOO fast.
the only thing is i believe a car like that should have a V8... nice short block and let er rip

Here's an update on Operation Black Beauty; you may recall this was the '86 Camaro I picked up for $300. As the PO stated, the V-6 had a cracked head. I ordered two rebuilt heads off eBay, and a Fel-Pro gasket kit. The heads were $100 each, and the gasket kit was about $75. It's all back together now, and this darn V-6 runs like a top! I'd drive it anywhere. Since the video below was taken, my neighbor and I have put on the A/C compressor and charged the system with refrigerant. The A/C now works after years being down.
