Intermittent SES Light

I got a question for you guys. My SES light comes on periodically and then goes back off. I know I could go to an auto parts store and have the the codes pulled, but to save a bit of time and also to see if you guys have experience with the same dilemma then maybe I could just jump straight to the problem and fix it. The SES light doesnt stay on and it primarily comes on when decelerating from a cruise at say 60mph and if i drive for about 30min. after it comes on it will go off.

I am leaning toward o2 sensors, because with the 245k mi. on the odometer I can almost guarantee that they were never changed. I also dont have a Cat. so that maybe some of the reason too. Has any of you guys had the same problem and fixed it?

With my cam swap coming up I would like to get rid of this nuissance of a problem before the swap is done, reason being, if the cam would happen to trip the SES light it would be easier to diagnose the problem without having an already existing problem.

Sounds like you already know what you need to do. The number of sensors and problems it could be can't justify anybody just telling you to replace XXXXXX part and you'll be fine.

I can make a wild guess. Insufficient EGR flow.

Now get it scanned and see if I'm right!

Count me in as third. Before I turned the egr off in the code I could drive for a half hour with no egr and then the light would come on but ONLY under decel. But comeon, why throw parts at it? Have the code read and know for sure.

would a plugged cat make it come on like this?

You'd feel a plugged cat before an SES light would come on.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I didnt have any idea that EGR flow would have anything to do with the SES light?? I thought that only if the EGR failed it would cause the light to come on?? And come to think of it...my 94 camaro had the same dilemma before I parked it. The light ONLY comes on during decel. Im going to run by Autozone after work today and I will be sure to let you guys know what it is since we have a little bet going on here!!

I doubt Autozone can scan OBD1.5...

Not on OBD1.5. ALDL cable and TunerPro/ScannerPro with a definition file does.

Nope, I have to go to a shop to have the the codes pulled. Forgot about the OBD 1.5 crap. No, the paperclip trick will not work on 1.5. You know, the same thing applies to the V8 equipped 94s also, my 94 Formula with the LT1 is also OBD 1.5 come to think of it because I went to autozone for that car a while back to have the codes pulled and they could not pull them....because of the OBD 1.5. OBD 1.5 OWNES!!!

paperclip. lol ive also used a hair pin, and used the cigg lighter to burn the plastic ends off. lol that little lighter can do alot more than people think.
