There is no way to make this short, so here it goes:
'05 Impala, 3400 LA1
Initial problem was some slight white smoke from the exhaust, very little, however the spark plugs were covered in orange. So I decided Head Gasket.
After pulling off the heads, the chambers and valves were covered in orange and a light coat of orange on the pistons. The amount, to me, suggests the LIM had been going for a while as well:
I had a set of heads that I had cleaned up off an '04 Montana and did some light P&P. Since I already had those ready, I swapped those on. Upon rebuilding the Valve Train, a few of the rocker arms were loose. One of them wouldn't get tight for anything. I finally pulled on it and it came right out. I had stripped to the whole to hell and back.
I couldn't reuse the rocker, the bolt threads were ruined and the aluminum was higher up on the bolt than I could get with a die. I had gotten a set of 3500 Valves/Springs to go on the heads from the Montana and since I could no longer use them, I cleaned up my old heads and swapped the valves and springs onto them. I replaced the Valve Stem Oil Seals as well.
Now somewhere in here I decided to trip and hit my box which had all my other rockers sitting in order. Needless to say they were no longer in order. None were physically damaged.
I put them back on anyway and grabbed one from my other stash - enough to get the engine running.
Pushrods went back on in order. They were in a different box...
Well, it runs. However... I now have some Valve Noise that is loud enough for me to be concerned about, but not loud enough to make me run and shut off the car. It sounds nastier the higher the RPMs, I start getting really worried around 3,000RPM (haven't gone any higher) yet and really don't want to.
I am assuming I will be replacing the Rocker Arms... How far down am I am going to have to replace, pushrods, lifters?
Obviously, yes, I am an idiot. However, am in the midsts of desperation. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
