  • Oill pressure issue after rebuild..

Working on a 98 Olds Silhouette with a 3400. Full teardown/rebuild/cleanout with new crank, cam, cam bearings etc. We spun the oil pump with a 8mm socket attached to a long extension and a drill and had oil all over. We then just dropped the oil pump drive gear in, which at first would not install, but with a slight turn of the crank it dropped right in. Then proceeded to put the engine back in the car and finish off the rest of the engine. We re-installed it as a long block and then proceeded with the engine re-assembly. It started right up, but of course, no oil pressure. No real noises other than valve train, which I would suspect with no oil pressure. There is no gauge, only an idiot light which of course remains on...My question is, first does the lower intake have to come off to pull the oil pump drive gear back out? Clearly the upper intake has to be removed as right now you can't even see it. I would believe the pipe running to the heater core would have to be removed off the lower intake. Second, whats the best way to put this drive gear back in? Should you leave the shaft in the oil pump as we did and then put the drive gear in, or try to stick the shaft in the drive gear with some grease and then drop it in as a one piece item. It would seem like the way we did it is correct. Is it possible for the drive gear to install nicely and still have the shaft off to the side of the drive gear? IE not engaged with the drive gear itself? Or do I have some other sinister problem...Talk about a PIA....

    Thanks

Not sure how the shaft/gear is coming apart on you, but when I've pulled mine, the shaft comes up with a gear stuck on it, and I just wiggle it back in like I wiggled it out. Maybe you have a gear not in place anymore now like you are thinking. I would start there as something doesn't sound right with how you are describing. I never looked at mine that close to see if it came apart or not, it was always intact.

did you check the gap between the pump pickup tube and the pan?

Only the upper intake has to come off (and any lines in the way) to get the OPDS out.

was everything torqued to spec and all the bearings properly installed?

I did't check any gap between the pump and the pan. We did have oil when we spun with a drill. I did check one con rod and one main bearing with plastic gauge and we had good clearances. This was one of those remanufactured crankshaft kits with the mains and rod bearings supplied, so I guess I'm hoping they did it right....( I know foolish of me, but the alternative might result in violence on my part) I think I am going to pull the sending unit and crank over the engine and see if we have oil flowing. If we do, then I must have a bad clearance issue. BTW, my oil pump drive shaft is free to pull out of the oil pump as well as the drive gear housing, meaning it's not attached to either. I'm assuming that's correct..

If bearing clearance was excessive you would have some audible knock along with low pressure. So I doubt it is your cause.

Did you have the pump off the engine? Did you change the pump? Recently we had a member with a pickup tube that fell off the pump after a bit of engine operation.

ha that was me. i still had some oil pressure tho, just weird readings

i cant think of anything that wasnt already said but maybe try buying a cheap oil pressure gauge and hook it up real quick to see the readings. im sure you can find one for under 20 bux

Well looks like I jumped the gun on this issue guys, We pulled the oil filter and PCM fuse and cranked it over. We had oil shooting out of the filter. So now I felt far better. We started it up and let it run for 30 sec or so and all the lifter clatter went away. Ran it for 1/2 hr or so with no issues. The following day I got a new oil pressure switch and installed it. Started up the car and no more oil light..We are planning to install a gauge, just to be sure, but it looks like the sending unit didn't survive the oven cleaner/soap and water process..hopefully another 250k miles for this beast..This time without the LIM failures I hope!
