  • ALDL Software and a 3100

Can you use a ALDL Cable with a 95 Montecarlo? Its a stock 3100. I've had a quick browse through some of the avalible software, none of it seems to clearly spell out support for the 3100.

tunerpro RT works with the 95 3100.

Yup. You can log only, no tuning.

Use TunerPro RT, but if it has a bug with the 3100 data stream, when it records it records blank/corrupted data. But looking at it in real time and reading codes is fine.

ScannerPro (related) will log just fine however. But you can't clear codes yet.

      I have definitions for both.

If you just want to check codes:

These are the most complete for the 94-95 out there. I may have a newer version on my laptop that I have modified, but these should do you just fine.

isaachayes, you reply to EVERYTHING related to 3100s...

and it records most values accurately, unfortunately BLM and INT and a few other values don't, so tuning the 95 PCM is not going to happen anytime soon if ever.

stay tuned and soon enough my guide for converting to a 91-93 3.4 PCM will be up and should you need to tune, it'll be a great way to go about it.

          Yeah .... so?

Yeah some of the needed ones are not there. I can't remember some of the others, but it was like RPM or something too. If you look at the data there are huge chunks just missing from the file...

          Look forward to the guide.

i remember the only important things not showing up to be INT BLM and i think spark advance... but everything else that one really needs to know shows up.

my logs also showed an occasional glitch: RPM being 60,000, Speed being 240, coolant 300, knock count went from 0 to 200? instantly in one sample, back to 0 in the next... not sure what caused it, but it would usually happen once every 25 minutes or so. for a while i thought my cable might of been junked, but i have never seen that on wifeys GP... oh, well, another excuse to upgrade...

Thanks Guys - Guess I'll make my ALDL cable today at work, . BTW, if anyone is interested, I do have a copy of many of the GM datastream specs. As for the random spikes etc, on logged readings, my guess, as an electrical engineer, is simply that the 2 transistor cable circuit has a potential for noise on the signal, especially if low grade non-signal transistors were used.

Here is the schematic I used

I modified it a tiny bit from the original. I added an activity LED which actually is helpful for when you send the all silent command, you know it went through, then you send the connect command.

There are simpler ones but this one is 100% compatible with serial standards. I got some TI RS232 chips for cheap from jameco.

                  ABS Codes...

Finaly got my USB to Serial adaptor going(at least at work, lol), so I'll be in the computer this weekend. Do those definitions you attached earlier include ABS codes? One thing after another it seems, the ABS light came on this week(and out came the fuse after the ABS went off when it shouldn't have, nearly frickin killed me)

no ABS stuff in there. i've tried to get a ABS only definition going but couldn't get anything out of it...

I think moates had the ABS info in the aldlstuff.zip or someone did.
No my def does not cover that, as I think you have to connect with a different mode to pull that up.

the aldlstuff does have it in there, but i could never get it to connect... that was a while ago, and i've since honed in my ADS making skills so i may try it sometime later...

So i fought with the ALDL cable for hours last weekend to no aval. The USB->Serial adapter i have seems to work(it can run a serial mouse).

The serial->aldl cable should be good(2 transistor version, i've tried it with 2 diffrent transistors just in case it was them, and totaly scrapped and rebuilt it twice), but I am unable to connect. Turnerpro RT records bad packets. Scannerpro attempts to connect, but dies while "waiting for 400ms of silence"...

Has anyone had this work with a USB->Serial adapter in the past? I'm ripping my hair out right now, i've made much more complex electronic circuits in the past, and can't figure out WTF i'm doing wrong.

i just bought mine from aldlcable.com

much easier to work with and it looks slightly less ghetto as well...

If you are using a 2 transistor circuit with a USB adapter that is your problem. The 2-transistor circuit is more of a hack than a real circuit. It does not comply with the RS232 standards and since you are using a USB adapter I doubt the adapter is going to tolerate it.

That is why I build the circuit above, so it's 100% compatible with RS232 standards, does not steal power from the serial port to run, and just plain works.
