Under normal circumstances no engine is an interference engine. If it were custom valve reliefs would be the least of our problems. But all of the 660 engines are interference engines. If for some reason the cam timing is out of sync with the crank rotation you will smack the valves like you have discovered. In the case of swapping pushrods well the problem lies in the valve being open to begin with (because the long pushrod is in the wrong position) and then being open even further when the lifter rises.

as soon as the rain/snow goes away, and it warms up, AND i get some time off work ill get along to fixing it. i have a good set of 3100 heads, so im just going to switch valves with his(mine are ball and pivot) and see what else we find.

p.s. dumbass owner of a speed shop called me a liar and said you can take the timing chain off of these motors and crank on them all you want and they wont hit. and said that subaru is the only interference motor around lol.

He live under something that resembles a rock, or does he just live in a cave where there are nothing but pushrod v8s? The ricers in your area must go with just visual mods and no real engine work if he hasn't seen an interference engine besides Subis.

Almost all pushrod v8's are interference too. Actually there are far less NON interference motors than there are interference motors. Can anyone name a modern day non interference motor?

The 2.3 in my truck, but seeing how it was originally designed in the 70's that probably rules it out as being "modern". But now you've got me thinking, lol.

SuzukiGhostRider beleives that the 3x00 and 3.1 2.8 motors are non interference too... LOL

Proof.. A 3400 I bought had 2 or 3 bent valves from a snapped camshaft. Here's some of the pistons.

ok just to keep you guys updated, i got "layed off" (guy said if he gets more work he will call me in a month or 2) blah, so i went to nc to help my father in law work on his 69 superbee so i havnt even looked at this car. my uncle has fucked around with it and found that it has 3 bent valves. and a bent pushrod. so idk what he is going to do, but ill tell ya, its crazy as shit that this "non interference" motor has all this bent shit from the pushrods backwards dont ya think? lol

                      Installing now

So I'm in the same boat somewhat. I just got my motor back from the guys that did my bore out and assembly. Problem is he didnt have the gasket so my pushrods are out still. Now I know there are shorter and longer and I want to make sure I don't make this same mistake. I got the GEN1 2.8L as lovely as they are. I notice the rod guides are listed as O and B and I'm sure thats telling me what one is intake and exast but i dont know what one is what and my Chiltons of course doesn't happen to mention any of this. If anyone happens to know what one is intake out of the B and O on the guides I would be much appreated.

                      Thanks
