  • Which OIL PUMP for 3.4 swap.

my truck is a 92 2.8, the motor is 95 3.4, i pick up a oil pan off a 85 2.8. when i got home and compared it to the one on the truck. it looks differnt, the oil pump area looks deeper and the rest thinner than the 92 2.8..

im trying to figure out which oil pump i can use with this pan? if your wondering why not use the pan and pump off the 92, theirs a hole where a rod shoot through it

If I'm not mistaken.....the 85 oilpan is not the same as the later 87+ 2.8-3.1 oilpans....the front end of the pan is configured differently because of a change in the front cover design, and (now...don't quote me on this) you'll need an oil pump for a '91 or later engine as the diameter of the inlet is 3/4" whereas the earlier engine pumps were 5/8" inlet.

Yea you should use the larger cast iron pump found in the 3.4L (also found in 3.1L) and also use the correct 3/4" pickup tube. Melling sells the parts you need for the job.

Also an 85 pan will not have the correct front lip to mate up to your timing cover. You need an 87 or later oil pan. Also you need to make sure you get the same style pan to fit your chassis. 4X4 pans are different than 2WD pans and do not interchange.

Why not just get a new pan?..(assuming you're not strapped for funds)....they are not that expensive....I think the replacement pan is about $65 at most outlets...had to put one under the 2.8 of my sons Fiero last summer.

87-88 2.8 Oil pans are on sale everywhere currently for $25 brand new! I know this because I needed one for my 86 and the 87-88 wouldn't fit....

at Autozone....the Spectra or the Pioneer pans are about $62..(search S-10, '92). I purchased the Spectra last year...it does the job without any fuss. If a pan can be found for $25 new....is this going to kept a secret? ..let us all know
