3.1 Roller Lifter - No springs?

I feel this is a completely retarded question but I'll ask any way. I'm doing R&R on a 3.1 with a failed lower intake gasket. I've pulled the heads so that I could clean off the pistons and disassemble & clean the lifters. So far I've found most of the lifters were severely gunked, so I'm glad I did this. However, I really have never, ever seen any kind of hydraulic lifter that didn't have a plunger spring. The lifters in this 3.1 have no plunger spring at all. Is there really no spring, or did someone else beat me to this job and tossed them out?

Again I feel really retarded for asking this, but... I've seen stranger things.
