  • 3400 Cylinder Head Bolts...

So I've been working on changing the head gaskets in my 2001 Pontiac Montana. One of the mechanics here pulled the lower manifold and heads for me last night, now I'm left with the pieces.

I got new head bolts... it looks like there two different lengths and two unique ones. I need to know where they all go so I can put this back together tonight.

    Thanks!

It does make sense... I figured that's how they go. There are two unique bolts that I'm not sure about though. One has an extended hex head (which I think mounts in the passenger side torque strut inside the hole) The other has a stud on the hex head... I'm not sure about that one.

i know that one of those (i think the one with the extended hex) goes on the front pass side corner of the motor, just behind the water pump kinda, it's for the bracket that holds the front pass. motor mount/torque strut. My 3400 came from a montana and had that one there. don't think it had another one though. hmm

yes, thats where that extended one with the hex head goes. All the others ones *should* just be the longer or shorter ones. Maybe i just dont remember putting mine together but I thought there was only one special bolt like that.

Count how many bolts you got. The last time a bought head bolt a got two exta, and they were diferent than the rest , so I didn't use them.

Last time I bought head bolts, they were all the same length and shape aside from the one with the extended head

I bought them for a 3400 as well since you couldn't ask for 3500 head bolts at the parts store.

I just put heads on for my 2000 Venture and the pack came with two oddball bolts and then a set of long and set of short bolts. RedBird is correct the hex bolt with the round top fits inside the front passenger motor mount/air conditioner bracket. The one with the stud on top is for older engines (fits the gen2 engine in my '89 Cutlass Supreme) and will not work with the newer mount, which is why there is an extra bolt. The long bolts go under the valve cover and the short bolts go outside around the exhaust ports.
