  • replacing fuel pump

on a W body how do you replace the fuel pump?

on some car there is a cover under the seat over the fuel pump and sender.

what about the 1988 W body?

Now that would just make too much sense to have a removable plate over the pump now wouldn't it?

    It's GM after all.

Sorry, but you gotta drop the tank.

My siblings have owned VW's, Honda's and other imports and they all had a cover plate inside the interior and by removing the back seats or in the trunk there was always a access port by removing the cover to get to the fuel pump and sender.

The fuel tank is full so I guess when the tank is 1/4 full before it gets dropped.

I think some of the newer 2000+ w-bodies had something like that.

this looks like something that will take some time to do.
not to mention getting fuel all over the place.

There not really that hard to drop. The hardest part is loosening the band strap bolts. They like to break off so use plenty of pb blaster on them. If you take your time and some patience you should be fine.

I'm not worried about the band straps coming off.
I' just worried I got too much gas.
what is a good replacement pump?

When you get the car up in the air and remove the rubber hoses that connect the gas tank to the filler neck you can get a hose into the tank to siphon the gas off to a workable level.....
                Hope this helps,,,,
                Tom.....
When I replaced the tank/pump in my Z34 I just got a replacement pump from Advance......

I know that this is an older thread on the subject of alternative ways to R&R the Fuel Pump from the "W" Carline Series... but since I could not find one here for the 4th Gen F-Bodies... I thought I would post a link to a very well-done "How To Access, Remove and Replace the Fuel Pump in the 4th Gen F-Body Carline Series...through the TRUNK..." and at least show that I was trying to stay on topic and not to duplicate the effort if it was already competently and safely handled. I'm concerned that after Scotty's 1994 Camaro has been sitting for such an extended time frame...that it would be wise to drain out the old fuel and do this replacement before the engine swap comes around and have one less thing to worry about when it comes to having adequite fuel pressure when the new engine is fired up. If anyone on the forum has already done it this way or has a more specific post on the subject germaine to the F-Body cars... I'd like to know if they encountered any problems not mentioned in the link below:

I just used the fuel pump to pump out 3/4's of a bad tank of gas in a 95 S10 SS. It smelled so watered down I wondered if it would even catch fire. That's one way to lighten the tank to make it easier to drop, or in your case, get rid of the bad gas before the new pump is installed.

Thanks for the heads up P-R... So did you do this from one of the closed circuit fuel lines in the engine compartment?... And just actuated the key to energize the fuel pump into a pressurized mode, without starting the engine and then pumped the old gas into containers nearby? Or... just exactly what method did you employ?

We unhooked the line going into the fuel filter that was about 1 1/2 feet from the tank, hooked a hose to it and ran it into a bucket and activated the pump by way of the fuel pump relay bypass pigtail in the engine bay.

Good Stuff... I've never, ever tinkered with the fuse or relay boxes on our F-Bodies...(You know how skittish Bobby can be around electricity...) so if you have some images that will keep me from FUBARing the hook up ...That would be "Great" and I would be "Great"ful...
