  • Common problems for the 2.8 MFI

I would like to know what are the common problems known about the 2.8 MFI?

Although knock on wood I never had any major issues with mines I heard there is a common oil leak where the dizzy is supposed to be and intake manifold issues too.

Can someone elaborate on the problem and what is the required fixes.

Everything posted here is subject to correction. If I'm wrong, let me know.
    • Since it uses the MFI system, if an injector shorts out on one bank it essentially kills all three cylinders. If your engine is more than fifteen years old (it is) and you don't have a service history for the car, plan on doing the injectors. And don't cheap out like I did and only do the ones that are bad, because according to AllData, GM bills 5.2 labor hours to do injectors on MFI engines, whether it's one or six of them. Yes, they're $70 a piece, but you'll kick yourself when more fail later on.
    • Haven't heard anything about the oil leak except on early 3.4 DOHC engines.
    • I don't think the intake gasket thing came about until the SFI engines, and then because of a combination of faulty design and corrosive DexCool coolant. As long as you use regular green coolant you should be fine.
    • Don't overheat this engine. It uses an iron block and aluminum heads, which makes for messy head gasket problems if you overheat them. For reference, see the 2.3L Quad4, well known for eating head gaskets.
