  • egr valve took a dump

i got a weird situation with my 95 olds achieva. pulled the codes on it and my egr valve is bad. so i took it off and the passageway was plugged full of junk. got it all cleaned out and now when the cel light kicks on it stumbles goin up hills under a load. so i pulled the egr valve off and left the port open and it had more throttle response and quit doing its little stumble. would it be ok to just delete it with a flat plate? no emmisions testing here where i live. not really lookin forward to spending 180 bucks for a new one if its not needed. thanks

Clean out the port in the intake, and clean the valve with carb cleaner, working the valves open and closed with a nail or awl. When they move and close smoothly then try it again. Unless it is stuck open then you need a new one. Yes you can block it off, and you'll get a check engine light, but the car will run fine. Don't leave the hole unblocked though as that will cause a vacuum leak. 1/8" aluminum plate works as a block off.

its all good man lol. i got access to a scanner 24/7 so reading codes every now and then is all good. i think we may have one in the shop but i'll check tomorrow to see whats up. if it isnt a swap i'll just delete it.

To block it off get some plate aluminum like I said or steel/etc and put the gasket down, then the plate, then the EGR. That way it seals the EGR exhaust tube and intake manifold with minimal effort.

well, i tried freeing up the egr only got 1 pintle to fully free up, another was stuck until you tapped it and the last one was stuck good lol. ended up welding all 3 holes plus the larger hole that goes to the ex. mani shut. so far no more stumbles, and i found a fudge up from who ever worked on the car before, one of the previous codes was for the crank sensor. when i changed the trans fluid and filter, i was looking at the cooler lines that go to the radiator and seen this harness hangin down. ended up being the crank sensor was unplugged lol. finally got her goin good for now.
