  • Question : OK Now Is My 2.8L Good for a While?

My 84 Pontiac FBody w/ 2.8L has 180k mi. It's not abused or anything, just a daily driver - mostly hwy driving. It consistently delivers 25mpg on a weekly basis. (sometimes 27 on purely hwy) I've gone ahead and replaced the intake manifold gaskets as a 'preemptive' measure. (FWIW the rear water jack had some corrosion and was probably on it's way to leaking)

I'd like to get the car/motor to last 200k or maybe 220k.

What, if anything else, should I keep an eye on or consider servicing?

    Thanks!

Timing chain and i'd drop the pan and clean it out along with the oil pump pickup.

I have almost 300,000kms on my Trooper and they were hard miles and my timing chain was in great shape last time I checked. I had to replace the front cover gasket because it was leaking water. I never hurts to check but that does mean you will have to take off the water pump and front cover.

        Thanks.

I have also replaced the water pump as it recently started to weep a little water out the shaft.

It does have the original timing chain however.
