  • Remove Water from Engine During Manifold R&R

While pulling the manifold to replace the gaskets I did not get all the water out as I'd thought beforehand. I would say a good cup or so of water probably fell into the lifter valley and below...

I dabbed up what remained in the valley and drained the oil. The drain plug is left out for now and thought I'd pour a couple few qts of oil right into the lifter valley and let it pour right out the bottom. This might help any excessive contaminants. Then change oil very shortly after getting it running again.

I've heard these engines bearings don't last long if any coolant gets in there.

Anybody have any better recommendations on how to 'clean up' things, remove water... before (or after) re-installing the manifold etc?

    (This is an '84 2.8L w/ 170k mi)

    Thanks

Thats all you need to do. It will be fine. Prime the engine with a drill before you start it if your really concerned. If you cannot do that unplug the ignition module and crank the engine with the starter until you get oil pressure. Then plug it back in and run it.
