  • 3.1/ 282 install

Hello, i was just wondering when i install my 3.1/282 from the top, will i be able to clear the master cylinder or PM3 as they call it? My engine lift has an equilizer and the 282 is smaller than the auto so has anyone else had trouble here? the PM3 is such a PITA and i dont want to mess with it. Hopefully my swap will be done before the end of the week if i dont have to touch that PM3
    thanks ; )

in my Jbody i just take off the 2 nuts holding the master to the booster and pull it out of the way, takes like 5 minutes.

Ike it should clear the PMIII no problem, just keep an eye out you don't drop the trans on it when lowering it......have someone help you guide it......I'm going through the same thing right now myself.........

thanks Ken , i was just wondering i figured its been done before, havnt even gotten that far yet tho, if i could get the PITA balljoints out id be on a roll. everything under the hoods ready to go all i had to do was pull the axles, only to find out the lower balljoints DO NOT want to move... Any sugestions? no access to a lift... Im done for the day.

Ike you don't need to take out the ball joints just get the axles part way out of the transmission, as far as you can go. when you lift the motor and trans up you will have to go back under the car and pop the axles the rest of the way out as you lift up the motor. At least that is how I have done it with the 5 speed. If you want to get the entire axle out before removing the engine don't mess with the ball joint. Take the brake and rotor off then take out the center jut on the axle and remove the 4 bolts for the hub/bearing from the back side of the spindle. Then you can slide the axle through the hole in the spindle to get it out of the trans and jockey it out that way. Otherwise you might be messing with that ball joint for hours. Or like I said pull the engine trans then pull the axles out from in the engine bay.

!!!! wish i knew that yesterday, my buddy started undoing a couple of the nuts/bolts for the balljoint, now they have to go back on... it was so hot today i didnt feel taking those hub assemblys off. I took the rest of the stuff off the motor, bellhousing bolts ,grounds, im just gonna pull the motor by itself then the trans. ALL 4 bolts for the crossover pipe broke on the manifolds, quick fix for a machine shop but still another pain in my ass. rusty northeast POS.. This car is so getting beat when it runs again . clutch will probaly last 3 days unless the motor blows up first.

Anyways I'm scrapping the gen II's and picking up a Gen III 3400 today with 52k on it from the local salvage yard. I'm going to run it na for now until next spring.......I need a DD that does not blow up every week for a while! Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips ken, got the hubs off and axles out . looks like its gonna rain tomorrow so i have to wait to pull the motor...
Can any tell me if this sounds like oil related or lifter ... The motor has always runs strong and shows good oil pressure but sometimes when i turn it off hot and start it back up a few minutes later theres a serious lifter tick and lack of power... i usually just cruise it slow and keep off the boost and it always goes away after about 4-6 minutes of driving and the noise goes away and it runs fine again. Should i just change the lifters? i dont want to change the cam if i dont have to.

sounds like the phantom igniton box but it ticks? I dunno that is weird.......got me on that one Ike.

Yeah I just rebuilt it 3 months ago.......apparently either it does not like 14 psi or it was to far gone to be rebuilt. I will find out later on when I open it up for now the 3400 should be fun even if it is na!

                    good luck!
